What is up with BFG T/A Radials?

I knew it was coming. The rear tires need to be replaced and I failed inspection. No problem, pop over to tire rack and order a new pair along with a new set of wider wheels with custom backspacing since I didn't like the 235/60 on the 15" x 6" wheels I bought originally. Plus I wanted to pull them in since I occasionally rubbed on the quarter lip.

When I ordered the wheels it was 4-6 weeks. OK - custom made is going to take a while.

But Tire Rack (and every other place I checked) is saying end of July for the BFG T/A's.

I can get away with it I guess. PA requires safety inspection unless you run antique or classic tags. I'm guessing if I scraped the sticker off the windshield no one would notice since PA only has rear tags.

But does anyone know why the T/A's are backordered for 6 weeks?

09Frank65, I just double checked the PennDot website to be sure and PA state inspection IS required if you have classic tags however any emissions requirement is waived. If you have antique plates the saftey inspection is not required. Rick

It's of no consequence since I have neither antique or classic tags! The thought is that since the inspection sticker is on the front windshield and the tag is only on the back, the odds of being stopped for a failed inspection sticker are hopefully little to none!

Having said that, I will certainly be ticketed between now and the end of July!:crybaby:

+1 on the Firehawks. Put them on Jane and they stick excellently compared to the T/As. Rainy day driving is no longer scary as I don't fishtail everywhere when turning except if I really hammer the gas (which no one in their right mind does if trying NOT to fishtail in the rain). With the T/As I would fishtail if it had rained anytime in the past few hours or even in the past day. They liked to scream too if I turned while going too fast. Just the worst.

If you're looking to upgrade to a 15" and need a white letter tire, the Firehawks are the best. Last I heard they were being discontinued soon though (if not already)... small tires are just not in right now.

Speaking of Jane - how is she doing? Any progress?

these are about the best street legal tire you can get, at $350+ per tire they should be. Plus they have a great vintage looking tread.

They are available in the 215/60-15 size you are looking for in front. The rears skip the 235 size, but have 225's and 245's

I once ran a set of these in the relatively skinny 185/70-14 size on a stock Shelby GT350 suspension. The grip even in that size was phenomenal. I simply ran away from the other cars in the corners, despite the other guys were using (really) wide BFG Radials T/A's.

For the most fun out of any old Mustang with vintage sized wheels, I'd always use these tires, and skimp elsewhere if needed.

Wow - I didn't spend $350 a tire for the 18" 245's on my 09! My wife might take away the keys if I go that way!:}0

Just to be clear I have to wait for my wheels anyway so time isn't a problem. I was just curious if this was a production thing, or if 15" tire selection is going the way of 13" and 14" tires and being scaled back.

The selection for 235/60-15 tires seems to be dwindling. If I go 16", 17: or 18" I have my choice of just about anything.

LOL Nick. The inspection conversation went something like this:

Dave (owner): I'm going to have to fail you for these tires.

Me: Kinda expected that. Have new ones on order but they're out 6 weeks. Bought new wheels since I had to wait.

Dave - Are you over inflating your tires? They're only really worn in the centers.

Me: Might have something to do with 5000RPM and not moving.

Dave: You wouldn't do that - it's illegal.

Me: It's my friend Nicks fault. I can't take the peer pressure.

The timing is so close to perfect right now that I may leave the old ones on and bring the new ones with me and make the switch before we go home!

it would look like this:

that's what I'm talking about. It doesn't have to be so scary. What size tire are you looking for?

Z.
Car looks great Z. Love the critter roof ornament! I'll try photoshopping BSW tires on mine this weekend. It's never had anything but T/A's on it since I finished it. Before then it had square Pep Boys Tires.

Yeah - in the rain corners are treacherous unless I drive like my grandmother did!

I'm looking for 235/60-15 rear and 215/60(65?)-15 front.

I must not be driving it hard enough! :)

I suppose I could change all 4 tires and change to a different one. Suggestions?

RWL tires seem to be harder and harder to come by. Not sure how it would look with BSW tires. Maybe it's time to find out.

Oh - and I never take it out in the rain. Not because I don't want it to get wet but because it is scarier than hell driving it.

we'll all be a lot safer when the compound for these tires is changed, or discontinued.

Z.

They are a softer compound for sure and I managed to wear out the rears in about 7000 miles. The fronts look near perfect although I do worry about the age (~8 years).

What makes them unsafe?
