ihi doug2stanger here
i always have problems with alternator wiring..
i have like three books.....and some of them show a
drawing of where wires...go.....there are the two wires
in that yolk hookup thing...and according to my book.
the one closes to that is the ground.....and one of the others
holds that wire clip thing....but i have no idea what this
stationary thing is for.....maybe i still dont have this hooked
up right....maybe my alt is bad....i am going to have it checked
tomorrow.....but i want to make sure i hook up things right
when i hook things back up...this in on a 68 auto 289 coupe.
tell me if you see any problems here....thanks

Doug,

I had a similar problem wherein the previous owner apparently incorrectly hooked up the alternator wiring. My owners' manual showed what color wires went to which posts. (My alternator had five posts.) If you look closely on the back of the alternator you will see three letter abbreviations for what wires should go where. I think they are "STA" "FLD" "GRN" and "BAT." Just follow the owner's manual for your year. I found out that alternators and voltage regulators tend to go on the fritz simultaneously, so you might try taking both to an AutoZone or similar parts store where they have testing equipment. Hope this helps.
