Which booster kit to buy

Hi there. I bought nice 15*7 GT style wheels for my 66 coupe. I’m planning to buy Wilwood disc brakes (the ones below).

My question related to this is which exact booster and proportioning valve (kit) to buy.

The set up will be stopping a 400hp 347 stroker.

This shop looks awesome! I’ll give them a call tomorrow and see what the come up with. What is your experience in the difference in feel and performance of boosted VS unboosted disc brake systems?

I know plenty of the guys on this forum don't feel disc brakes or power brakes are worth it, which is a personal preference I respect. However, I wanted power brakes and built a 331 stroker for my Mustang and was concerned it wouldn't have sufficient vacuum for a vacuum brake booster. Rather than mess around with a vacuum pump or other fixes, I decided to go with a hydraulic booster (Hydratech) which is powered off the power steering pump. It's not cheap, but I am very happy with the performance. It has the added benefit of taking up very little space on the firewall.

For some reason, a lot of these guys have had a rough time with power brake conversions. I installed a MustangSteve kit a dozen years ago and love it. Flawless performance and a very nice pedal feel.

Yes I drove it before with the manual brakes and yes it was fine. As it is now, it’s better than fine. I save the workout portion of driving for the wide tires and and manual steering because I haven’t found a PS solution that sounds just right. But that’s another conversation.

I would also recommend against a brake booster - not because I think that decreased pedal effort is only for weenies, but simply because the quality of aftermarket brake boosters is currently very poor, and it is hard to get one to last (especially with a low vacuum motor). Once the diaphragm goes you will have a very poor pedal feel and stopping the car will be very, very difficult.

Perhaps the MustangSteve booster is better, as I would assume that he sources some kind of OEM booster instead of an aftermarket-built one (that's usually how he does things).

I put a power disc front setup on my son's 73. Got it from Chock back in 2013. It has made driving it much more of a pleasure- we never put enough miles on every year to keep the drums properly adjusted. Big improvement.

I would cast a vote against the installation of any power brake booster. In my opinion they just are not needed on these cars. In addition to that the fitment usually stinks. I am using a 15/16 bore master cylinder for a Ranger and had a Maverick style one before that. The brakes have always worked fine. These cars aren't 3/4 ton pickups or 70s land yachts. I have driven cars equipped with power brakes and really just prefer the feel of the manual brake pedal and effort is minimal.
