Is it worth rebuilding the old gearbox in my 71 mustang? There is a decent amount of play. If so, can anyone tell me what kinds of places do this work?

The Saginaw box used in the '71-73 usually doesn't get sloppy. I'd check the rag joint and the remainder of your suspension components before condemning the box. If you want a faster box, I believe the 12.7:1 guts can be stuffed into 14.4:1 boxes which reduces the number of turns, lock to lock, to around 2 3/4. You need to keep the Ford housing as it has a different mounting pattern than the Saginaw box used in GM applications. Ditto on calling Dan Chockley and discussing with him.
I sent my '71 Mustang power steering box to a company in Ohio called RODES RESTORATION, 1406 Lohr Rd, Galion, OH, 44833, 419‑468‑5182. I forget what it cost but he did a great job. You might want to give them a call.
