I haven't thought about this until tonight. First off, to let you know what my intentions are. I am building my 66 coupe to mostly be a weekend driver, I will be entering it into local car shows, and will probably try my luck a little with some more prestigious shows as time permits.

My coupe is basically a plane jane, that came with power steering. I started out not worrying to much about originality and just making it comfortable for me and the family. Those goals haven't changed, but I'm wondering when I start showing it, if I will either be docked or frowned upon for modifying the stang. I would think not, since it was a "nobody" to begin with, but....

Here are my plans, and things that I've already started adding or converting.

* Original A/C, inside and out.
* Center Console
* Converting the original black with black appt. standard interior, to parchment with aqua appt. standard interior.
* Original Am/8-track radio with original door speakers, and a Fm converter tucked away out of sight.
* Fog lights
* Low profile rally pac
* Style Steel wheels with duel red line tires (for showing, not everyday driving)
* Deluxe seat belts with the optional seat belt indicator dash light.
* Deluxe wood steering wheel
* Shelby Scoop (molded in for now)
* Original Disk Brakes (not Granada), Plus I'm adding a newer style Power booster and Duel reservoir M/C that will fit within the tight space without any cutting of the shock tower.

Things that I haven't fully decided on as to which way I want to go as of yet;

* 289 Performer intake and 600 Holley(already have) or Original 66 cast iron 4v intake and 4100 carb.(have intake, not carb.)
* Tri-Y's with duel exhaust and trumpets exiting rear valance (or leave single exhaust)
* M/T, Holly, or original valve covers (have all three)
* Original Aircleaner or Hipo Aircleaner (have both)
* GT stripe or leave rocker moldings on.
* Rear speakers (in package tray) I have some chrome round speaker covers that are from late 60's early 70's. I know they weren't an option, but they came close enough from that era, I think they might look good with the rest of the interior, and not stand out like a set of Pioneer or Clarion or what evers on the market today.
* Power door locks
* Power Windows, (no up or down buttons), actual window crank becomes the up down switch.
* Tri bar headlights or stock original.

I am also working on a Functional Ram Air set up "just because" that will look like it was made originally for the mustang back in 1966, if they would of made one. but that will be much later after the car is already done.

As you can see, I'm not doing much for performance, mostly convienance. I will probably add a mild cam, shift kit, etc. when I pull the motor & trans out for detailing, but probably not much since it runs good as it is.

What do you think, do they look at modification such as these, badly at national type shows, or do they have a class I will fit in?

Any criticism or suggestions you think I should consider on my modifications?

I don't think folks would frown upon your car unless you try to represent it as something it is not - such as it being factory built that way! *G* I think people appreciate a well built car.

I enjoy the concourse correct stockers and the extremely modified, myself. Both take a lot of doing (but I feel a concourse or thoroughbred class car would be tougher to accomplish) and it really boils down to the owner's preference.

Within reason, I think an owner should be able to express him/herself which ever way he/she feels. Of course shag carpet and using house paint may be crossing the line - LOL!

Hey, I like the fact that you are adding options that are original factory options for a mustang. Very neat. Also, I think the power window idea you have is slick. I might have to try that out on mine!!!

Yea, I second that on the power windows. That sounds really cool. But as far as the mods go, it sounds as if you are keeping looking factory original, and I do not see anything wrong with that. Was that not the point of the Mustang, the option car, to equip it the way you wanted it? Now if you try to sell it saying that it came equipped that way, not that you modified it yourself, then that is a bozo no no. JMHO fd

I sure wouldn't frown upon your efforts. I like the way you are approaching it with factory pieces for the most part. I have a 69 fastback that will probably have a few "options" added as well.

Hey, are the power window "switches" an aftermarket item, or a Whizco special? I may recant my anti - power window stance.

Its your car . Make it what you want. But remember someone is going to have some snide remark on how it should be this way or that way. Don't listen to them. Let the people see the pride and joy you have in it. It's for you to enjoy not for someone else.

I could always bring my car over as a 'guinea pig'; you can do all these mods to my car, then we can show it and find out what the judges say! ;) Of course, I'd be willing to pitch in a little elbow grease now and then hehehe

Hey, restomod is the way to go!! It's getting popular, so I don't think you'll have any problems!!

Hmmmm......seems many of your suggested mods have either found there way to my coupe, or will very shortly. I might suggest that you consider HiPo manifolds over tri-y's in order to keep under-hood noise down, and durability up. Also, I would definitely go dual exhaust over single regardless the configuration you choose. Go get em!

I took my 66 200 ci, C4, white coupe & turned it into a 302, (4 speed coming), Candyapple Red with pearl white Lemans stripes & GT stripes on the lower sides, bolt-on hood scoop. When I bought the car I was gonna put it back orginial, but then decided to go this way. Mine's a dailydriver. I love it & I haven't had any bad comments or looks. At least not to my face. I don't try to pass it off as a GT. A couple of people asked me if it was a GT. I tell em no.
Your mod's sound great!

It's your car, do what you want! The most important thing, I feel, is the quality of the work. I own a 66 that is a C code and I'm going to do what I want. Quite frankly, If I see another restored C code coupe or any year plain jane, I'm going to barf!

Anything that makes you happy, its YOUR car.. Moding a car is an American as apple pie. I would say the same thing to someone who restores their car and it is never driven on the road again. Not somthing I would do but its not MY car.
I think the additions that you have listed would make a fine car.

Who cares what everyone else thinks. Especially since you are starting with a plain jane.
I have a 65 convertible that came with a 302 when I bought it. I put on a edelbrock performer, and 700 Holley double pumper, tri-y's, fog lamps, a "warm" cam, and pony interior.

Nothing on this car can't be changed back of needed, but it is a "fun" weekend driver car - and it's QUICK too!!!

I've seen the power switches in the 'Rod' magazines. I don't know if you can put your own handle on them or not. They even have a stop on them, so that someone that doesn't know they are a switch doesn't break something when they try to crank the window down.

It is your Stang. Do it the way You want to. I thought about the same thing when it came time to decide how I wanted to restore my 64.5 convert. I decided to do it My way. I like your idea of the power windows being controlled by the widow crank handle. Let me know how that works. I want power windows in mine too. I feel if your not going ALL orginal, then, anything goes. Good luck and have fun.

"If I had known that getting married would slow down my Mustang restoration, I might have waited - getting married that is."

The modified class is a very messy situation at car shows. At general shows you will be thrown into a field of rods, pro-streets, etc. At a Mustang specific show you will be seriously out gunned in the modified class. Most of your mods are of an original nature --- with the exception of power windows (which you are hiding) everything comes across as potentially stock.

What you are proposing sounds like a solid fun or driver car, but from experience you will not be very competitive in the overcrowded modified class. National shows will be even tougher.

Go for it, look at the car as blank piece of paper. I think to many get hung up on there idea's of correctness, personally
I like to think I try to appreciate all types nothing beats a concours orignal car, but on the other hand well done Restomod, and everything in between.
I really wonder how many compete in shows with sole intention of winning there chosen class, I like to think most attend to look, admire, and most of all come up with there own thoughts and hopefully follow them.
