So back at the mustang project, overheating issue solved, but now it has a knocking or ticking noise. Now I’ve read threads saying oil pump bump there’s good pressure. We have located which valve it is. When it’s idling is a noticeable knocking/tapping, then we tightened the rocker arm extra (definitely more than normal) and the noise went away, but it ran like awful after that. So we back out the arm, all fine again. Hydraulic lifters, brand new one for that valve. Any ideas?

Hydraulic roller or standard? If its standard, I have seen way too many cams go flat on one lobe. Dont know why its almost always just one, but that is what I have seen.

Have you considered a bad lifter? In which case, pull the intake and inspect. Good news, it appears localized.

Redneckgearhead: Definitely not an exhaust leak
Kenash: Replaced the lifter already
Woodchuck: We will check the stud tomorrow. The valves are all perfectly in spec and it knocks. Its when we tighten it down tighter than spec that it goes away, but then it runs horribly. back it off, and it runs fine, but knocking is back

When you say the valves are adjusted to spec I assume you mean engine cold, lifter on the base circle and preload adjusted to zero lash plus 1 turn (1/2 turn if extended high rpm use).
