So some people say that the 16x8 wheels with 4.5"s of Backspacing can hit the upper control arm. Has anyone actually had it hit or seen it happen?

They will come close, but shouldn't hit. If they do contact the UCA, you can grind the UCA a little to get the clearance you need.

I recently installed a set of Opentracker's UCA with a 1" Shelby drop. I have Vintage 40's that are 16x8 with 4.5 bs and in the extreme lock positions, I just touched the wheel weights that were installed on the inside rim. I ended up removing about 1/8" from both sides of the arm to ensure clearance.

Not sure if the wheels would actually reach this extreme steering angle while driving (steering box and idler arm were not connected) but it was easy to fix to ensure no contact.

I have vintage 45's (16x8 with 4,5 bs) they wouldnt have hit if I used stock control arms, but they did* hit my global west uppers.

I say did because once I switched to rack and pinion, I lost just enough turning radius that they dont hit anymore. I ran 1/4 inch spacers for a year or so before I did the rack and pinion, that was enough clearance. Some people swear spacers are the worst, some say theyy are fine... 1/4 an inch I am okay with, but more than that, I would probably reconsider. I wouuldnt have used them at all except I ordered the rims and mounted them before trying (because I had been told x1000 that they would fit) but again, tubular control arms.

I've got V45's on my '66 with GW arms. I had to
have one of the rims fixed about 12 years ago bec
the tire guys used clip-on weights. The "corner"
of the upper arm will "shave" clip-on weights
right off a 16" rim at full steering lock.
Even modifying the steering stops wouldn't
completely solve the issue with clip-on weights.
Adhesive weights were the only viable solution.
My '68 has GW arms and V48's (minilite style),
but I used stick-on weights from day one so I
don't know if it has the clearance issue.....

This past summer, I installed the OpenTracker front suspension mods to my '69 Stang and I have V45 Rims (16x7) as well and was having clearance issues with the rim of the upper control arms. I had to remove the lip around both sides of the ball joint and also remove those clip on wheel weights (prior owner or mechanic) so it would spin freely. I also installed a pair of variable rate progressive springs with roller perches. A much smoother ride and I also added power brakes to the Stang....much more improved over stock drums!

All in all a great project just take your time and measure everything carefully.

I have 16x8 4.5 BS on mine with no rubbing. I believe the issue is with the 4 bolt ball joints on the UCA. 3 bolt UCA don't seem to have a problem or at most require stick on weights. 4 bolt UCA can be trimmed for extra clearance without affecting the strength of the arm and that usually will correct the problem.
