1965-66 Gauge Bezel Mod

OK, so for years I've been toiling a project in the back of my head to take a 1965-66 5 gauge bezel and fit it with a 4" speedo and 2-5/8" gauges. Well over the 4th of July Speedhut had a 15% off sale so I thought I'd take the plunge.

After a good month of waiting, I finally got the gauges in yesterday. Since I would no longer have room for a proper sized tach, I also decided to get the Shelby gauge pod and put the oil and tach gauges in there.. with warning lights and shift lifts respectively. I also got Speedhut to add the Shelby logo since my Mustang is "loosely" inspired by the GT350.

I took my cheapy 5 gauge eBay bezel (I got it for testing) and used a hole saw bit to cut larger holes into the front. I used a dremel tool to cut out all the un-needed plastic bits from the back. I am very pleased with the results. Next step is to do the same mods to my better quality 65 GT bezel and fit them in.

All in all, I like it. I do wish one of the vendors out there would make a bezel that could accommodate the larger gauges since I think they fit the bezel just fine. The 2-1/16 units look pretty small in comparison.

Thoughts?

-Shannon

Here are the results:

The speedo is just sitting the hole and thus at a slightly different angle than the other gauges, that will be fixed when I mount it permanently:

I think the pod turned out fantastic. They really nailed the logo:

Looks great, love my Speedhuts too! Did you go GPS speedo? also, your going to really like the integrated bright and turn signal indicators.

Only thing I would change on your set-up- put the clock by tach in the pod, and oil back in dash.

Coolblue,

Thanks!.. I went the the regular old electronic speedo. I spent hours, days and weeks getting the VSS sensor working the right way with my T5.. Now that is working, I want to keep it. :)

As for the oil pressure gauge. No can do. The Shelby pod will only take a 2-1/6" gauges so its a different size than the others. Besides, moving the oil pressure gauge up next to the tach was a conscious decision since if I'm running her hard, I'm mostly looking at the tach and the oil pressure gauge is equipped with a warning light. For that reason I just think it makes more sense to put it there.

Take care,

Awesome job. It doesn't look aftermarket - I mean that as a compliment.

I do realize you took your time to perform your work to be able to mount the performance gauges on outside of the 5 gauge bezel. I will be honest to say that I feel the gauges do look oversized in respect to the entire panel. I found the following pic with aftermarket gauges off the net to illustrate the ratio between a stock bezel and the smaller four gauges.

Yep, I could see why you would say that. But this mod was a case of form following function: I aways thought the OEM sized gauges were too small and too far sunk into the dash to be glanced at and quickly understood. This is me solving that problem. Having the larger gauges for a few years, I don't think I could go back to the smaller size now.

To each his own right? :)

All good.
I agree with the rear mounted 2 5/8" gauges being too sunken into the bezel. Harder to see unless your at eyelevel. I considered your idea to mount from the front at first. I did decline the six gauges approach to keep the nice style of the original bezel that I like. Regardless, I decided on adding the performance gauges, but mounting the small gauges from the back side. I do realize these bezels have a chrome inlet, and I would rather go the aluminum of the gauges. BUT the addition of the aluminum bezel with chrome, plus a steering mounted tach with aluminum has brought out some interesting contrast between the two materials.

Looks good! My only gripe would be the smaller gauages in the bezel aren't quite centered(figure you wont take offense since its a cheapo test bezel) I would probably take my time and work the hole higher with a die grinder or the like.
