All,

In cleaning up the engine compartment, I found a washer fluid reservoir. FoMoCo C90F 17B613.

As far as I know this car never had this feature, and I don't know how the washer would work. Anyone care to share info if they have/had this installed on their '65/'66?

My 65 has the windshield washer on it. The reservoir itself is the black back with the big FoMoCo script on it. Hangs on the inner fender apron under the hood right behind the radiator support. The windshield washer pump is located in front of the shock tower on the same inner fender apron, but down low - in the same area where the fuel line enters the engine compartment. The wire that activates the pump runs from the windshield wiper switch, through a hole in the firewall just above the wiring harness for the headlights/horns, and then to the pump. Here's a pic to give you an idea:

Hi LeeFred, thanks for that photo - helped a lot. I'll be looking for the pump today. I don't have bag, but it's a maybe a 2 qt box that is used - probably an afterthought by who had the car before us. How does the washer activate from the cabin?

Normally the washer is run by a small 3rd (or 4th if you've got a stick) pedal down by the driver's kick panel. It looks kinda like the foot operated e-brakes on some 80's cars.

This could work two ways. If it's still set up as stock, that pedal is a pump. Pump it with your foot a few times and it'll spray the windshield.

If it's been upgraded (since you've got a '69 tank and all) it could be a switch to run an electric pump. Push it down and the pump should run.

Or I guess since someone's already been mucking around with it it could be anywhere, but those are the most likely answers.

The 1965 Mustang was optionally available with a windshield washer, as part of the Visibility Group.
In 1966 the windshield washer was Standard Equipment.

"C9OF", of course, is a 1969 part. The 65-66 and early 67 used a bag.

This system shown is the 1966 Mustang with the Visibility Group. The pump shown is the diaphragm-type impulse pump as equipped with the 2-speed wipers. Standard 1966 1-speed wipers utilized the same motor-driven pump as 1965 Mustangs.

The Visibility Group included windshield washers, 2-speed wipers, day/night inside mirror, and remote LH door mirror.

Larry-
When I purchased my car 23+ years ago, I found a similar reservoir mounted on the radiator support just above the voltage regulator. I also had a fully functioning washer system (including the bag). The previous owner modified the extra reservoir to function as a coolant recovery tank. In the event that you don't find a pump or other washer related plumbing, you might have found the same.

Rhutt - ah ha... this is probably the case as I don't have a washer fluid bag nor is there the electric pump. Also the wiper control in the cabin does not push in nor pull out, so that switch is obviously not for a washer fluid system. I think you've solved the mystery! I better put that hose back in place ;)

Thanks!

So everybody *but* 67-68 has an electric pump, but I've got to drive around pumping on this pedal? Wow.

My brother used to have a '74 Duster that had a similar manual pump so I just figured they were all manual.

Now I'm jealous of you guys with your fancy electric washer pumps and normal looking wiper switches.

A lot of us don't drive in crappy weather so for me at least, I have no plans of every using my washer in my 67. Don't even have fluid in the bottle. It does however all work as it should.
Fyi for those that never have used a 67/68 setup. When you 1st hit the washer pedal, it'll also turn on your wipers too.

My car was an early 66 K-Code with 1 speed wiper motor and in this picture you'll see the earlier style pump and is what I believe was used until mid production 66, and it's the original one, so the one in the photo in previous post would be a later type than in 65. Just throwing it out there if you want to get a correct looking pump for your car, I know they make repro of these...

Larry -
When you say " I better put that hose back in place." I have to ask "Where does the hose come from?" If it is a coolant recovery tank, the hose should connect to the radiator just below the cap.

"The 1965 Mustang was optionally available with a windshield washer, as part of the Visibility Group."

My Original '65 vert (June '65) has the factory Dual (2-Speed) wipers and windshield washer, but came with a normal standard short mirror, and a normal outside mirror. Both were original Rotunda mirrrors, not repros. I have since upgraded the Rearview mirror to the '65 Day/Nite type as a safety item since the mirror is much longer. Other than a Power top, It's the only other option that my '65 vert has. It's never been messed with.

I would think that you could have ordered the 2-speed wipers and Washer Bag as a separate option without the Visibility group possibly. I can tell you this, Noone has upgraded my car with 2-speed wipers.. All date codes on the wiper motor and bracket match with the rest of car's build dates.

I'll bet if you take a poll... that you'll find other '65 owners with 2-speed wipers and washer bag that don't have the entire visibility group.

My other '66 vert only has the single speed wiper and washer bag.

)
