The turn signals on my '68 vert are frustrating me. They will burn solid for about a minute, no blinking. Hazards not working either. Here's what I have done-
New T/S Switch
New Blinkers (T/S and Hazards)
New Front Housings
New bulbs all around
New fuses
Cleaned rear housings
Checked and cleaned rear ground

And yet... something is still wrong. All wiring looks good. Ground problem at front? Something funny with the replacement housing up front?

Did the turn signals and/or hazzard flashers ever work or were they non working when you got the car? By the way your vert is a beauty. Wish mine was a J code.

Do they blink when the engine is running? Have you tried different new flashers?

I found that some replacement flashers require higher than normal voltage and current to function properly.

My turn signals blink very slowly when the engine is not running. With engine running they blink at about the rate of our newer cars. Check the car's system/battery voltage. When not running the voltage is probably around 12.5. Engine running it's probably about 13.5-14.

Thanks Slim. Both the hazards and signals worked about a year ago (pre-restoration) but I did not monkey with any wiring. They don't blink with engine running or not.
I will replace the flashers. Which flashers should I try?

Make sure the separate ground wire to the bulb sockets is grounded to a clean/bare spot on the chassis. And make sure you used the correct dual-filament bulbs. There's a lot of I's to dot & T's to cross during a restoration so something could have been overlooked.

Last time I replaced a flasher the new one worked very slowly. As I recall I went back to the parts store and found they had three listed as fits. Bought all the other two and found they varied from not working to works great! Used the one that worked best.

IMO these things probably have a wide variance in acceptable spec. A 40 year old vehicle is likely to have less than perfect connections, grounds etc.

IIRC these flashers are like $2-$5 so it's worth a try to get each kind to try.

You mentioned you replaced the flashers with new ones. Why?

Replaced flashers with new from Advance Auto. Replaced the entire Turn Signal Switch.

I would look at the pinning you did for the new switch harness.

Everything goes through there and if you mucked any of the pins up you will get unpredictable results.

I replaced my switch harness many years ago and went through this trouble shooting. Putting the left blinker on and the horn going toot toot toot :)

+1 for that. When I got my coupe back from the paint shop, the restorer had painted the steering column and installed a new TS switch. He had inadvertently swapped a couple of wires when reinstalling the pins, and it made things act crazy. It took hours of chasing wiring around before I finally figured it out.

Good luck,

Checked the pins on the TS switch harness- Good. Replaced the flasher- Still no signals.
Where do the front signals ground? Do all the front lights ground at the voltage reg?

What do you mean by "checked the pins on the TS switch harness-Good"?

All the pins may be in there but it only takes one in the wrong position to be flaky.

I double checked the diagram that I created when I replaced the switch. All pins are in the correct place.

The Ford switch harness I put in my car about 15 years ago had the wires mostly the same as the old ones I removed but some were different.

Did this new harness map 100% to the old harness?

Yes. Mapped perfectly.

Turn signals are fixed! Traced low voltage all the way back to the fuse panel. Fuse was good but the terminals were severely corroded. Pulled the panel out, cleaned and spliced back in. Signals are working!
