Okay guys I just bought this car a 1969 Mustang fastback so I get the car delievered to me and after looking at it I noticed the dash tag doesn't look legit...Little help from the guys with 69's would be nice here is a picture..What do you guys think...There isn't a tag on the door and no noticable numbers on the inner fenders...The car has a VERY EXPENSIVE paint job, so I'm really worried about moving the fenders back...Just let me know what y'all think.....

Tag looks fine to me, it's missing the Ford border but thats not unusual. Car was built in San Jose, Ca, was a Sportsroof of some kind, and had the 351W 2 barrel engine. Get a Marti report and it will answer all your questions.

If I recall correctly, the '69 VIN tags, on the driver's side of the dashboard, were plain like yours and painted a satin black. Apparently the black is almost all gone on yours. As a point of reference, the '68 VIN tags, on the passenger side of the dashboard, have a patterned border around the edges that framed the VIN.

Why don't you order a replacement door tag from Marti? I'd bet the Highway Patrol would like to see a tag there....

my 70 is exactly the same. over the years I always wondered if the black paint was original or not but it appears it is. as far as yours dont worry about it

EDIT: for San Jose cars look around the upper driver side rad support
if youre lucky you may find a build tag

mine was actually behind the AC Cond. took me a few years to find it there.

jgroce1985,

My 69 San Jose car window vin tag looks just like Buckeye's. I think it is actually stainless steel. Your's is just weathered and needs a new border decal that's all.

If you want just remove your top fender bolts save for the first and last one. Then use a plastic pry tool and lift the edge a little to see if you can verify the numbers on the shock tower match. Just an idea. Bruce

Actually there was never a border decal on his. I've had two 1970 Mustangs and both of mine had/have VIN tags that look just like the OP's. I bought my first 1970 Mustang back in 1985 and it was all original and had never been apart. I got it from the proverbial "little old lady". The VIN had no border like Buckeye's.

Should be able to verify the fender stampings that way. I had to order a door tag from Marti when I had to replace a door a while back, as here in CA the CHP requires two VIN ID's on a car. Make sure whoever installs your door tag knows how to put the rivits in correctly as well...

For comparison purposes, here's a picture of the VIN tag from my Dearborn built 69 Mach 1 (dash pad and windshield removed).

I dont know how the door tag number, or the windshield tag that
IS the VIN no. cant get you registered, providing it matches the number on the certificate of title? No matter how beat up it is,
if it matches then you can transfer title or plate the car.
I dont know the rules elsewhere, but this is the law in Michigan.
The only exception to this is when you build a car from parts and obtain a "builders title" The state creates a VIN for this vehicle.
You never said whether you have paperwork that validates
your windshield tag?
