Hello,

I am rebuilding a 6 cly 66' coupe with my son (he gets it when he's 16) and of course he wants a V8 for more power. He just bought a 302 block. I'm wondering if 289 heads, intake, flywheel etc will fit on a 302 block.

Thanks

All the 289 302 parts will interchange. only thing that is different is the crank (longer stroke for 302) all the parts should fit the 302. What year is the 302? Ford changed the balance of the small blocks in the early 80's so there might be a difference in the flywheel and balancer

Both the crank and connecting rods are different, everything else is pretty much the same.

If my kid gets a car when he is 16 (im only 24 now and don't have any yet) then here is a list of things I will be putting money into BEFORE it gets a V8 (assuming we started with a 6):

Collapsable steering column
At least 3 point seat belts
BRAKES BRAKES BRAKES

If he is responsible with a safe six then I will be glad to help him/her swap a V8 into it. Just my thought

Ford changed the 302's balance in '81. Single piece rear main seal was introduced in December of '82, four bolt crank pulley for passenger cars came out in '69 and the threaded hole at the rear of the block (on the driverside) for the mechanical clutch linkage (equalizer bar) disappeared at the '79 Model year.

These are some of the "gotchas" you may find on the 302 blocks.

just for the record, that was in '70. All 3 of our '69's had 3 bolt pullies.
I'm confused now....was that the '70 model year (e.g. 1969) or 1970 the calendar year? ;) :D

I remember using a '70 (D0) 302 core for one of the race car engines and it had a thick ring damper and 4 bolts. That was back when I was young and stupid and used stock dampers on 8000 rpm engines :D
