Ford started using roller blocks in 1994. The block casting number starts with "F4TE-".The F150 Lightnings had roller blocks, but used a flat tappet cam. Not sure if the Lightnings got the iron GT40 heads or not, but the rest all got "E7TE" heads. E7's are the same as '87+ Mustang 5.0's but with bigger head bolt holes. Performance-wise they are a step or so below GT40's.

Interesting find on the F4TE block....CrackerStang and I tore one down a few weeks ago that came out of a May 1994 built Eddy Bauer Bronco. Much to our suprise, it had a roller cam in it. ALL casting dates indicated that this was the original engine to that vehicle. The heads were nothing special except 1/2 inch head bolt holes.

I think it depends on what you have and what condition it is in..If you have a healthy 69 motor I would simply swap out the camshaft..It has the advantage of a very stout block and higher compression than the late model motor....Of course if you have to rebuild everything you might as well start with the roller block..I am not sure the GT40s would be much of an upgrade over the 69 351 heads so again it would depend on what was in better shape..
