Forgive me please. I'm sick of the no longer clever dubbing...Rustang!

Kinda like people who feel clever calling the Explorer Exploder!

Regardless, your welcome to VMF,

Carefully consider your budget for this car if you don't want to end up broken. Just the glass alone would cost you over 1k and the sheet metal to make your car whole again would probably cost upwards of 2-4k. I would not put a 460 in the car. The body simply wasn't designed for an engine that big and not many people have put a 460 in a 65-66 Mustang before so there will be a lot of learning to do. Mustang II suspensions were all the rage for a while because they were cheap and plentiful to scrap from junk yards and everybody was converting their 50's/60's rod to a small block. However all the Mustang II's have been crushed and the stock crossmember will crumble underneath the weight and power of a 460. The 302 V8 eventually made it into the Mustang II but it was an afterthought really. Additionally the strut rods in a Mustang II point backwards and originally tied in with a brace that ran under the transmission. The 66 Mustang strut rods point towards the front and connect directly behind the front frame. I'm not saying you can't do it - hey I like to cheer for the underdog but it's important to understand what you're getting in to.

We hear over and over how "the wife" is against this or that. Is that the popular thing to say or is my wife wierd?

I want mine to look like hell, be extremely loud and get 5 mpg. Also, what type of manual trans would be good to pair up with a 460. Is there anything that's cheap and abundant?[/QUOTE]

It's good to have a game plan, so yours sounds like when the car is done you will have a rotted looking Mustang that sounds like a 70's Lincoln with an exhaust leak that gets really bad gas mileage. Gotcha.

LOL I meant that totally in jest........

I can't say I've seen a ton of 429/460's with stick shifts behind them so I can't comment on cheap and abundant trans setups. I'd imagine with the right flywheel ,bellhousing, etc. You could make a 4 speed or T5 work behind one.

To reiterate I'd go with a small block.
> abundant and cheap
> amazing parts availability (new and used)
> can be made to walk past a 460 boat anchor motor with ease( no disrespect but I've always favored the Ford FE bigblocks)
> removal of shock towers not required
> better handling than a bigblock

For the record my wife is a true keeper, she's very supportive and tolerant of my addiction.

but she still looks at me funny and doubts my sanity with most of the crap I pay good money for and drag home......

What shock towers? LOL j/k

It's basicly ready for a MII as it sits aside from cutting the towers off, plus you would still have to make sure the frame rails are good!

You can set up a big block to handle just as well as a small block, it's just how much money you wish to invest.

You'll go broke replacing all that's missing. Look through my build thread below, I got a lot more for $300.

Like you I'll be dropping in a 460, so much of the car will be unneeded, that's why I bought this straight sheet meal shell, relatively so.

As mentioned, sheet metal, doors and glass will price that car waaaay above what another more complete shell will run you.

Let's see, you're 17 now? I guess that means you should be done sometime by your 37th birthday! :) Good luck, sounds like a plan to me.
No - Didn't read the OP previous message? 1 year to get it to a driver, 1 year additional to iron out the final details. :pirate:

P.S. - Does anyone want to burst the kid's bubble and tell him how insane this is to even consider??? He is setting himself up for lost money and major disappointment. ......me thinks.........

Also, on the FE block I have a 390 in my truck but I was wanting bigger ( seems about right for a teenager right) I'm not opposed to using a FE but would rather use the 460 as I have it and it's ready to run. When I was looking for a car I was looking for one I could use the 460 for.

That changes the equation. I'd still rather run an FE. But since you already have the 460 what the hey, might as well.

If you wanna follow along with another 66 460 build, this a link to another board that I'm on.
