Any suggestions on how I get my Mustang to idle without giving it gas. I can get the car started now, but it stalls after a few seconds off the gas. Again, I rebuilt the entire engine. I have not done the timing yet because I can't get the car to stay running. I have adjusted the carburetor idle screw with no success.

Could be a vacuum leak. Looks like you have power brakes. Disconnect and plug that hose and see if that helps keep it running. Are the carb base gaskets good? When you get it started, rotate the distributor to get the idle speed up. Then you can hook up the timing light and set the timing. I don’t know what it is for a 67, but my 65 likes around 16 btdc. It’s an automatic. Specs for mine are 14 for auto and 6 for manual.

Thanks guys, I don't think it's a vacuum leak. I have double checked those lines. That's pretty straight forward. I think it's the distributor. The strange thing is that the car will idle for 20 seconds or so when I let off the gas and then all the sudden in stalls out. I will try rotating the distributor, but in this model, there is not much play to do that. It's locked in against the block. I know I have to do the timing, but I can't do that unless the car stays running.

Any other suggestions, keep them coming.

I have a timing light, but no vacuum gauge or tach.

Here is the issue I am having now.
I can start the car now and it will run for 20-30 seconds after I let off the gas. It will eventually stall out. When I go to restart it a second or third time, it won't idle at all. If I am not on the gas, it stalls out. It's really strange

I loosened the bolt on the distributor and rotated it slightly. That didn't seem to help.

Any thoughts on what it could be ?

You can set the basic timing to 10* BTC for starters. Disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the distributor and plug the hose. But if you have to keep the engine revved up to keep it running then you are creating centrifugal advance inside the distributor so your timing should be set at about 20* (10* initial + 10* centrifugal advance) until you can get the engine to idle at about 600-700 RPM..
Have you checked for vacuum leaks as the cause of your engine not idling?

If you don't have a timing light, just keep adjusting the dizzy back and forth a bit and see if it gets any better. You may get it close enough to keep it running.

HI guys, I am still need of some tech support. Here is my issue
I rebuilt my 67 Mustang inline 6 from the ground up. the engine is back in the car and all connected.
I can start the car and it will run for 1-2 minutes. It will then stall out. I will then have difficulty getting it restarted and stay running. If I wait 5-10 minuets I can restart again.
A couple of things
  • I have noticed that once the engine stalls I cannot rotate the pulley/fan easily. That might just be pressure built up
  • I was able to check the timing and that seems correct now. It's set at 6 for my motor
  • There is a new fuel pump, fuel filter, starter, ignition coil
  • I have not done a compression test because I can't keep the car running
  • I have not checked for a vacuum leak (waiting to buy a gauge)

Anyone have any additional thoughts on why the car keeps stalling out and then won't start again ????
I am stumped
