After changing Water Pump, something not right...

So.. First of, I'm not a mechanic, but through using this site and alot of Youtube Videos and am trying to learn by doing some of the easier fixes. I had a mechanic that did some side jobs for me in between his 69 Fastback restoration. One thing he worked on for me was getting it to run cooler. He replaced the thermostat, radiator cap, and installed a shroud, seemed a little better but I still thought it ran hot. My mechanic passed away, so I decided to tackle replacing the water pump myself. Spent most of the day today on the job. Not too bad a job just tedious. I refilled the coolant, ran it a liitle with radiator cap off, added more coolant as it went down. It seemed pretty good, no leaks. Then I put the cap on an ran it some more, started spitting alot of coolant into the overflow tank. I turn if off, and it continued making a lot of water noise and more coolant into overflow. But what really bothered me was the upper radiator was so hot I could barely touch it. Little disappointed my first engine fix went bad, I was hoping to go for a ride tomorrow for Fathers's Day.


Any thoughts..I'm think thermostat, but it was just replaced about a year ago.

Jack the front of the car up so the radiator is the highest point. Start the car with the cap off. Let it run until it is warmed and coolant is flowing. Miss sure it is full. Let it the car down and cap it. Should be good to go.

Oh, and I challenge you to be able to touch anything at or above 180-195 degrees for any length of time.

Did you replace the water pump because you thought it would make the engine run cooler? 99.99999% of the time, that will not be the case. Did your replace the pump with the correct water pump? There are several pumps available and some are wrong for a '67.

if you topped the radiator off and put the cap back on and ran it till it got hot (180). the water expanded and had to go somewhere so it goes to the recovery tank. don't worry when the water cools off and contracts it will cause a vacume in the radiator and suck water back into the radiator. this is normal operation. every car does it with a recovery tank.
in the old days before recovery tanks, you would fill it up and it would spit a certain amount out(after getting hot). this is where it would stay filled. if you took the cap off the radiator when cool usually the top of the fins were visible with no coolant above them. now when you ran your car and it got hot your fins would be covered.

It is normal for the top tank in the radiator to be hot. The coolant in the top has just come from the engine. The coolant at the bottom tank should be about 30°F cooler.

Coolant should be about 1" below the neck when filled. Any more than that it will just spit it out. Coolant, like anything else, expands when hot.

To answer Pete's question: I guess i'm not accustomed to the older cars. After driving a little while it just seems like there is a lot of heat radiating from engine bay. Probably just need to get used to it.

Update: So this morning after it sat overnight, the water level in the radiator is a bout a quarter inch over the fins. The overflow tank has about an inch in it, which was almost full yesterday. I ran it a little while with the cap off, stayed about the same level. Capped it ran another 10 minutes or so. So gurgling and rushing water sounds like last night. Took for a ride around the block, no issues. I might be OK I guess. I venture out later for a longer ride.
