Anyone running FiTech on a 289?

My son and I put a fitech unit on his 289 when we were restoring it. I thought it would be fairly easy and self tuning, but its not. It hasnt learned a damn thing except maybe how to stall better. I finally went in and manually entered some WAG numbers into the tuning parameters. I don‘t even know what all the abbreviations mean. I essentially put in some numbers that were in between min and max values. All numbers were zeros before I started. I got it running, but not well. It is rich and has flat spots. FiTech tech support has been absolutely no help at all.

What I am hoping is for someone to run through there menu and share what numbers are in there. Even posting a few pics of the tuning screens. This would at least give me someplace to start.

Any other advice on getting this FiTech unit running good would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Which FiTech unit are you running. I am running the Go EFI 600 and haven't had any problems. What is the rest of your setup? Intake and cam? What kind of fuel pump? Check all your connections. The white wire that is the key on positive needs a good reliable source. I would reset it completely assure that the parameters you entered about your engine are correct.

Do you have timing control? My fitech runs great but every time I tried timing control it was a disaster. My first suggestion is to look for ignition noise.

No timing control on mine, it is the 400 hp 2 barrel on the original motor. We have been through the wiring multiple times to make sure the 12v ignition source was full voltage and uninterrupted. It responds to changes, it just doesn’t learn. At all. The fuel pump is not fitech, but it is providing the right pressure throughout the rpm range.

How long have you been driving it?

If you don't know the abbreviations then don't mess with the settings. You might be making it worst.

I would start with loading the default profile and making sure the IAC is correct. The more you drive the more it will learn. It is not instant.

What cam profile did you have it on?

you are misunderstanding. We have set it to default many times. It is hard starting, dies when put it gear, basically will idle great but nothing else. Going through the tuning menus there were zeros in most categories. After trying to drive over several weeks i went in and found it has not learned anything except how to die better. I went through the menu and input numbers in the middle of the range on most of the items. It would now run, but rich, and flat spots on acceleration. After running like that for a wee while, none of the numbers have changed. It does not learn anything. We did the idle set up, and though I don’t remember the number it was fine after a little fiddling.

I’ve had A GoEFI 600 hp system since 2017. The “all numbers were zero“ comment strikes me as a communication error or EMI/RFI noise issue which many times can be traced back to the blue tach signal wire. Another symptom of this is the RPM display on the menu showing a 59xxx value which is obviously impossible.

I did also have a problem with my original non-FiTech fuel pump that caused me issues. I purchased a Tanks Inc GPA-4 pump with the tank. While the pressure was solid the ECU was sending a PWM signal which the GPA-4 couldn’t handle Eventually causing it to pump erratically. Summit customer service took care of me with a warranty claim and a new pump and life has been good since then.

As suggested check the tach wire. Make sure it is not near the plug wires. I cut mine near the unit and ran a shielded wire to my MSD box. You might also want to run an extra ground from the unit body. I think it is from the left rear mounting bolt.
