So I've been searching for a solution to get apple car play (yes - I've been spoiled by new cars) and while some will hate on it for not being original, I enjoy the convenience of a screen for my apple maps, google maps etc as well as Spotify etc.

I devised an affordable solution which included a wireless apple car play unit that hooks directly up to my retro sound head unit. The solution doesn't require any modification or cutting or drilling- you can actually mount it anywhere.. but I decided to mount mine in the box in my centre console.

I haven't documented the whole solution - I'll try and get to it in a future post but if you want to, PM me, I'll walk you through it. It's a simple install, connects to either apple or android phone seamlessly and only taps into your ignition wire and ground.

I was looking at something like this.

What's cool about these is the screen can be completely detached from the head unit (up to 63in) so you can remotely mount it.

Now these are massively spendy but there may be similar options out there.

Looks similar to the Pioneer I ended up with.

That's cool, but I'm struggling to see the benefit beyond what a magnetic phone mount + Bluetooth connection would provide. I suppose the screen is a little bigger, but with some crafty solutions, you can make it basically invisible. Nice to park and put your tech in your pocket.

How do you tune local broadcasts?

Very cool. I've shared in a couple other threads on this forum. Last year I installed a 10" generic brand touchscreen unit that I purchased from Amazon into my 65. The dash was already cut into a single DIN. Lots of great options out there on Ebay and Amazon. This runs native Android, so you can run any app supported by the system; Chrome, Netflix, Amazon, Spotify, Motortrend, HBO, etc. Yeah, it plays and streams full screen video. It also has wireless and USB support for CarPlay and Android auto. It's a hi-resolution, 720P screen. Built in, it also has wifi, bluetooth calling, and supports over the air radio. It also runs the Edelbrock ProFlo app, which is really cool having a secondary virtual instrument cluster. If one wants to get really fancy there are some models that have integrated CANBUS features.
