Big brake conversion problem

I’ve bought disc brake conversions from chocostang and after assembling I realized they gave me 5 lug rotors when I have stock 4 lug. I am not sure what to do as I have new chrome rims with 4 lug. I’ve searched and cannot find 11.5” rotors with the hub that are 4 lug and right now my ideas are A. find an adapter for 5 lug to 4 lug or B. find new rims and sell the current ones, the only problem is my rear wheels are still 4 lug. I do not have the money or time to convert the back wheels to 5 lug. This is for a 68 Mustang, completely stock besides engine has been swapped from I6 to a later 302 5.0.

It's not at all the "big brake" problem I was expecting to read about! I gotta be honest, I did chuckle a little bit, but it was in a solidarity kind of way, as we all have made some kind of mistake like this over the years. Fortunately, these types of problems can be resolved with the correct application of more cash. Please let us all know what you end up doing.

That's a bummer but it happens. I understand the limited funding, and I can tell you EXACTLY what I'd do in your situation. I'd buy a pair of those wheels in 5 lug and put them on the front and run it.

It will drive you a little crazy until you eventually do something about the rear, but almost nobody will notice.

NOTE: I think your current wheels are 14", if i can squint and see the text on your tire. You may need 15" to clear those calipers. You could test this by pressing the studs out of your hub and mocking it up with the wheel.

Even if I had to run 15" on the front and 14" on the back, that's what i would do rather than try to redrill hubs/rotors or make some adapter work (which would throw your backspacing way off)

This is my most likely route as i’m concerned for the integrity of the rotors if I get them drilled and there’s many more options for replacements of 5 lug rotors if I need more down the road. This was just a simple mistake of not cross checking the parts, easy to do but as this is my first car I’m building/restoring, it slipped my mind to even check. rookie mistake.

I'm not sure about a 68 mustang but on a 65-66, when converting to a v8, most of the steering and suspension require replacement with the v8 parts. To such an extent that I wouldn't just drill the rotors. Maybe this not an issue for 68's. kip

Since you have already done a V8 swap, the proper thing to do is convert your I6 Mustang to a V8 Mustang. This is an involved build, but it is necessary for safety as well as performance. Modifying your current brake kit to work with 4-lug wheels is not really a good plan.

I fail to see how the spindles could be upgraded and yet remain four lug, not looking to pick on you Alex, just confused and slightly concerned. kip

It's a 68, upgrade from what? In 68 there was only one spindle. There was also no difference in the suspension from what I remember. I once helped a kid redo his front suspension on a 68 I6 and when we went to get parts there was no difference between V8 or I6 parts. I know the steering was the same because the tire rods were the same.....because the spindles are the same.

Ford finally discovered it was cheaper to use the same suspension and steering, the 4 lug, brakes, and the rear end were the differences between the 6 and 8 from what I remember. So as far as safety goes in 68 if you swap in the V8 you could get away with a brake upgrade and pray your rear dos not grenade.

I think the natural assumption would be that anyone going through the trouble of upgrading the brakes would also upgrade from 4-lug to 5-lug wheels.

Sell the wheels and tires you have and purchase the appropriate wheels and tires. Your five lug wheel options are 100X more.

I just dragged one of those out of the leaves on the side of my garage earlier this year, it's been buried since I moved in here 12 years ago. I didn't realize they were selling for that much. I don't remember what I did with it. I know I didn't throw it away. I think I have two 67-70 8 inch housings in storage and I have never even owned anything but 66 cars. I only got the 1st one so I could run late model wheels on the coupe I had for a short while with no spacers.
