My question is with the intermediate band. It's got a 2 1/8 inch wide, 1/8 thick intermediate band. I was told by a parts dealer that it couldn't have come from this transmission??? He also said I needed to replace it with the same type of band (which is pricey and a bit hard to find). (The transmission parts guy actually told me he needed the old one as a core and wouldn't ship me a new one unless I sent him mine first) I don't think, though, that anyone has opened up this C4 before. It looks like the badshoe video guy pulls out the same band in his video.
Can I simply replace this band with one of the more flexible band that comes in all of the rebuild kits (it looks like the badshoe guy does it)? Did this transmission originally come with this thick and?

Hhhmm? To quote Tommy Lee Jones in 'The Fugitive', this sounds a little "hinkey"! Frankly, I'd check with other suppliers.
You shouldn't have any problems installing a later-model intermediate band in your C4. However, with so many good, durable performance parts available at reasonable prices, there's little reason to choose a standard or 'economy' rebuild kit, even if you don't hot rod your car.
I've had good luck getting quality parts from Oregon Performance Transmissions, or even eBay vendors such as this one.

Yes Sir. You can replace the band with a Flex Band. I have done this many times during an overhaul. Pay close attention to the end play specs for the gear train & also the total end play in the case. Definately use Ken's Bad Shoe video to keep you on the right track & you wont go wrong.

Hello, so I’m having and issue with the intermediate band as well and used Kens bad shoe video which was great. I have a ‘64 green dot and te band just is not lining up with the adjuster and piston shaft. It look like it needs to be inside the transmission farther but if it goes any farther the band will be on the sun casing as well…..my original band is 1 5/16 wide compared to the new one that’s 2 1/8 wide and also the new one is considerably taller than the original one….. any help would be appreciated!!!!

 

Yes, use the modern flexible band.

The rebuilder is likely confusing your rigid intermediate with the narrow 1964 one that is ~1.2" wide. That narrow band is extremely hard to find and is usually rebuilt. They look identical except for the width.

I recommend Deome's Workshop C4 rebuild DIY. Most excellent and free. (he also rebuilds the p/s steering control valve too).

I would send off your rigid band to a shop that wants it, they can grind it down to 1.2", rebuild it, and use it for the 1964 C4.

(If anybody knows how a 1964 C4 can be retrofitted to use a 1965+ band, please get ahold of me...dealing with the narrow band is a PITA).

You need to turn the band around. The offset goes towards the pump.

 

Those early cases have a unique servo piston. Not sure if a later servo piston will fit . The flat strut they use allow the offset of the band .
