Can you use an accel coil with a Pertronix 1?

Furthering the saga, there is an Accel Super Stock coil (oreilly part 8140C) available to me. Can i use this successfully with my Pertronix 1 ignition? I will pick up a Pertronix Flamethrower coil in a larger city, but if this could get me back on the road that would be great.

I don't have a resistor wire, if that's what you mean by ballast resistor?

Ok, well hopefully I can get this coil and get on the road, then detour over to Albuquerque which is apparently the location of the nearest available Flame Thrower coil. I don't remember what witchery was needed to make the Pertronix I and AAW harness happy so I prefer to go back with what I know works (or worked, rather).

Yes, but use a ballast resistor (you can easily affix it to the coil mounting bracket).

If your original coil was an OEM unit or aftermarket unit using 1.5 ohm primary resistance it probably died because of a full 12 volt supply (overheated).
The coil I was using was a Pertronix Flamethrower, which specifically states that it wants a full 12v without the ballast wire.

I doubt it died from overheating as it has been in my car for five or more years now! It has definitely seen many worse drives. However, I'm paranoid that the new Holley system managed to kill it somehow. But even that doesn't really make sense since I had driven 580 miles on the same day before it died. I'm hoping it just gave up.

I have the Ignitor 1 running on a 12 V v8 system. I am using the recommended flame thrower 40011 coil as specified by the table in the instructions. Therefore, I have removed the resistor wire as specified...????

Please do keep this discussion going, but as an aside: I got myself sorted out with not one but three coils this afternoon!

A random guy had a random coil laying around that he said "looked just like mine" and sure enough it did, i measured and i think it might be 1.8ohms? My multimeter is not the most precise thing in the world. Anyways, I plopped it in and Jane fired right up super quickly and ran like a top. Seems happy.

The parts store guy also brought me an Accel, and because I'm paranoid I also went into Albuquerque and got a Pertronix Flamethrower ? I went ahead and put in the Flamethrower and interestingly, the car does not start as quickly with it as it did with the mystery coil. Hmmm!

Anyways, I'm all set now, I'm going to try to figure out what the mystery coil is, but between these three I should be just fine unless there's something sketchy going on with the Holley.

Read the next sentence on the instruction sheet under the one you quoted in caps...
Right, but I'm not using a stock coil or a coil with primary resistance lower than specified. I'm using the Pertronix coil, which is exactly what's specified.

Its primary resistance is 1.5 ohms, which is exactly what the system calls for. I've measured it on my multimeter.

FWIW, my Pertronix 40011 coil lasted for upwards of 50,000 miles - many of those in extreme heat at very high revs - with full 12V before deciding it was done. Maybe Woodchuck is right, but to me the instructions very clearly state that the 40011 coil needs a full 12V and I will continue running mine that way.

Given that the side effect of not wiring it with the right resistance is, apparently, only reduced longevity, probably most people will have no trouble with it wired either way since most people are not putting a ton of miles on their cars. But for those putting a lot of miles on their cars with specifically the Pertronix 1 and the 40011 coil, I would recommend going for full 12V per the instructions - since I know that it will last at least 50,000 miles.
