I was given an old CA title from 1990 for my 67 coupe, i checked with AAA that it had not been registered since then and was out of the DMV system. I just had my manager's husband (cop) sign off on it being inspected and I now have a clean CA title.

yes, I would

Robert, you are misunderstanding what a 'Title' is and does. A title is a business registration with the State. It is not a proof of ownership document. Generally, the owner and titleholder are the same person, but not always. With older classics, the car may change hands several times, on a bill of sale, without being titled. You would wise to check the numbers on the car and see if they all match, if not why ? You would also be wise, if the car is in anyway desirable, to have a LEO run the numbers in their database, title or not. Titles can be faked by anybody thats good with a printer. Some could spot the subtle differences, but most of us ? I think not. Now, I'm not accussing your seller of being a thief, but where did HE get the car ? And the person before him ? If it was reported stolen, it will be in there. Best check in any case. LSG

i just bought a 67 coupe without a title. or any papers at all! i called the dmv and told them im buying a car without a title and i wanted to check the title status and also wanted to know if the car was on non opp, and whats the cost for registering it ?

the owner assured me that it was a clean title and it's never been in an accident, he also said the car was on non opp.

the rep from the dmv said it was a clean title, But the registration hasn't been paid since 2014 and the fee's are $608!!

im not sure if all state dmv's allow the option to call and check the status of title and registration. some states feel its a matter of privacy i guess... but if that doesn't work then i would google ... dmv services or title and registration services. and call one of those local guys and they can tell u usually over the phone for free... if they wanna make a little money off of it they will charge like $20-$30.

or you can go in with the owner and show his i.d and do the transfer on the spot with no worries, if he is reluctant to do it, then it sounds kinda fishy.

I just had my dad file an abandoned vehicle claim thought the VA DMV after dropping the car off at his house for 2 days (I checked to make sure VIN was good to go prior to purchasing). After 45 days the DMV issued me a title clean and clear!

Check to see if your state has an abandoned vehicle clause. Process was easy and only $100.

In the state of Michigan the Title is Proof of Ownership.
It is also documentation of prior owners, and it also documents any liens on the vehicle.
I bought my Ranchero at a car auction.
I discovered the next day it had a lien on the title, and the vin # on the title was one digit off. The last digit was missing. I could not transfer the title into my name.
After a call to the Auction company that sold me this car ILLEGALLY, without a clear title. I gave them a day to fix the problem or I was going to contact the State Police, demand my money back, sue them, and have their auction business shut down by the State.
I have never seen people move so quickly to resolve a problem. They knew they messed up bad.
I had a clean title in my name the next day. The Vin # problem took a couple of months, but was easy to fix.
You better KNOW the laws in your state.
Because of the laws in my state.
NO. I personally would never buy a car without a clear title, from a private owner.

What if a guy bought a "parts" car with no title.

He had only a bill of sale to him, but knows it is not stolen, because he has it checked.

He decides it is not a parts car. So he needs a title.

Ultimately, this guy, decides to go back in time by researching previous owners.

The current owner finally finds the owner who was the last to register and title the vehicle.

He tells the old owner the truth, and mentions all the research that had been done to get to this point.

He sends all the papers he has to the old owner.

The OLD owner applies for a lost title and sends it to the current owner.

This might work??? There are still many good people out there. The internet has a lot of info.
