Personally I think Gramps is off his rocker, and so are you to pay even 12-15K. :no: Not enough info IMO to justify.

 

I say let him ask what he wants... To alot of people, myself included, we can appreciate the originality of a vehicle... Some people can't see the value in a rust free car not to mention originality and paperwork and low mileage etc... BUT they think it makes perfect financial sense to replace rotted floors/boxes, rails, fenders, quarters etc... They then have a patchwork car for tons more money than your grandpa is asking.. I say his is worth it 100%!! ( 12K that is)

 

Just a thought, he might get more interest in the auction if the car is described more thoroughly and instead of having a collage of pictures, have nice clear individual pictures for the bidders to look at.

IMHO, $12-15k is too high. I sold my '64.5 Coupe last week, it appeared to be in better overall condition and it went for less.

 

Agreed with the picture thing, the collage might be good for a poster on the wall but not a good selling tool IMO. You need some pics of the undercarrige that can be enlarged to see detail. Also you need pics of the rust you mentioned...

I agree with this. An original car needing some work may have a limited market at a premium price, but find the right person and it will sell. I paid more than the market value for my '65, and I did it because it was totally original. There is value in knowing what you are getting, and I knew I wasn't going to be surprised later by poorly done hidden repairs.

maybe in Cali. it may not be worth the 15k, but around here, a nice car like that could fetch it. I've seen rust buckets sell for 5-7K that I wouldn't give 1500 for, so that goes to show you. There IS a market for original cars, and if it doesn't go in that auction someone; overtime, will buy it. for 12-15K. If I had the cash, I'd easily give at least 10 for it.

 

To each his own. Did you notice this has all original running gear? Sooner or later will need a rebuild, and running gear makeover. Add that to a 12K price...now you have 17K into an original car that will need paint someday. You could get a quality restoration car for far less then that. :no:

 

The problem with so those called "quality restorations is you have no idea what kind of "quality" was used.. Most of the time it was poor quality done cheaply and no matter what anyone say, I will never be convinced that restoration metal work will be worth more than original unmolested undamaged sheetmetal. You have no guess work, no surprises, and no kids work to be undone... Even a car that is original in its rust is more desireable from a restoration viewpoint since you don't have to undo anothers "handywork" and if you have to do the engine and running gear over, so what? At least you can choose yourself how it gets done and not suffer the amatuers rebuild..

 

Not a very good ad. Can't tell anything from the pictures. I would rerun it with a LOT more pictures with a LOT more detail. Just because it has 71K on it doesn't mean that (A) it's not a rustbucket and (B) it hasn't been in an accident. You need pictures to show how unmolested the car is.

That being said, the downside of an "original" car is that everthing on it is 40 years old. That means that all the rubber parts (weatherstripping, engine seals, suspension, etc.) are shot and need to be replaced. All the chrome pieces (bumpers, door handles, etc.) will need to be replaced as well.

There is a lot of value in an original unmolested car but it will still need a lot of $$$ to bring it up to show (or even driver) status.

I myself prefer an untouched canvas, before I try and paint a masterpiece, or a piece of... either way it will go untouched until someone buys it... I've had to deal with plenty of my own mistakes in the past and I wouldn't dare bestow any of that upon anyone; it's just not fair. Besides my grandfather said I had to give him the full amount first if I had any thoughts of doing any resto work on it... he is wise, very wise old man and sharp as a tack. Thanks guys.

 

Thats like my grandpa with his 62 lincoln continental. He insisted it was worth 10k. I finally told him he wont get it and i will give him 2k and thats luck. He sold it to me. I got it running cleaned it and put full white walls on it. Now he regrets selling it. He wanted to buy it back and i said 10k and its all yours. He was pissed haha

 

Well I'll put some more pictures together and put a link to them. You guys can tell me what you think after that... oh yeah btw... no accidents, no rust, beyond driver status (runs just as good as any new car I've driven, absolutely no leaks - dry pavement no moisture of any kind on undercarage or engine compartment... I'll put the pix together and let them do the talking.
