Headers and Power Steering

We had Hooker Competition headers put on our 68 convert with 351C last summer. There is an extention bracket bolted to the frame that drops the steering ram lower with headers.
This spring Mike put new suspension, negative wedge and new steering unit on the car and found the bolts on the drop bracket were almost pulled out of the frame. He welded the bolts to the frame and thought it was secure.
Last week after driving the car from SLC to Reno for car show we heard a terrible noise and squeal. The bolts had pulled out of the frame again. The steering ram was even bent.
Couldn't disconnect the power steering as some people suggested because the belt also drives the fan and water pump.
Found a mechanic and welder in Reno who knows Fords well. Seems to be a common problem. Dropping the steering ram causes more stress than the bracket or bolts can handle. But no one had told us previously.
So holes where drilled through a quarter inch steel plate that the bolts where threaded through and then the plate was welded to the frame.
Hopefully it won't be coming apart again.

That's one of the reasons why I'm running exhaust manifolds on my Shelby and my 68 vert. I've seen how much the frame rail flexes when the wheel is turned on a drop bracket car.

i had the same problem. i did something similar

first i split open the frame rail at the seam.

then i took a 1/4 piece of flat stock about six inches long and using the bracket as a templet drilled two holes slightly bigger then the bolts.

then i welded two grade 8 nuts centered over the holes on the flat stock.

i place the steel inside the frame rail and sewed up the frame seam.

no problem since. i installed the drop bracket becuase i thought it would maybe help keep the heat away from the ram. but i had the clearance with the stock bracket....if it breaks again, ill go back to stock

Yup, very common problem. We've fixed it now 3 times on my daughter's '69. I will never again put headers on a power steering car that requires the drop bracket.

FWIW, the Hooker Comps (not Super Comps) and, from what I hear, the FPA headers don't need the drop bracket on a 351/larger engine.

I have Hooker Comps on my '69 with 351w and didn't need the drop bracket.

I had the same problem and fix for mine... I have manual steering now and don't have to worry about that happening again!
