On Sunday I am gonna go with my fiancee's brother to at 1969 Mustang fastback. The only thing I know it has 428 big block in it. Also the owner says it's a GT. I would like to know how can you tell if it's a GT or not?

Thanks,
David

Thats a toughy.The GT gas cap and center caps are easy to add on to a regular fastback.I know they have the bigger front sway bar.To my knowledge the only sure way is to get the paperwork from Ford.My S-code fastback has the reinforced shock towers but I believe all big block cars had these.FYI there were a little over 5,000 GTs made in 69 and I believe 2,??? were fastbacks.

The "Mustang Recognition Guide" says this:

('69 GT = very rare!/forums/images/icons/smile.gif)

GT Equipment Group was available for all three '69 body styles;

came only with 351 (2bbl or 4bbl), 390, or 428;

black, gold, white, or red GT stripe (depending on car color) above the rocker panel, but without any GT or MUSTANG emblems;

Pop-open gas cap w/GT in the center;

Hood Scoop - non-functional w/intregal (rear-facing) turn signal indicators. Shaker was standard w/428 Cobra-jet Ram Air, but w/no turn signal indicators;

Pin-type hood latches;

Styled Steel Wheels, w/GT centercaps (as mentioned above);

Dual exhaust (4bbl engines only) w/ chrome quad exhaust tips mounted under rear valance cut-outs;

and, Heavy Duty suspension (spring, shocks, and larger front swaybar).

HTH,

There is one way - get a Marti report. It's fairly easy to clone a GT for '69 since it all that was needed was an H-code or better. The rest of the (visible) package can be added later since it's really just stripes, the pop-open gas cap, styled steel wheels with GT centers, hood scoop with turn signals, pin-type hood latches, and dual exhaust.

It also included a heavy-duty suspension, but most people wouldn't be able to tell if that was in place or not.

The likely tell-tales are that it won't have a "Mustang" emblem on the dash (if wood grain) or that it will have either the repro GT or Mach 1 pop-open gas cap, since the original '69 GT pop-open is no longer produced (but even those can occasionally be found used).

But the only certain way to tell is with a Marti report.

If it is a SportsRoof with either a Q-code or R-code 428, it won't really matter if it is a GT or not. It's a valuable piece either way. GT package just makes it a little more flashier.

On December 19, 2002, the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart was "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. It was also the #1 R&B song on the same date according to BirthdayJams.com. Additionally, "Lose Yourself" was the longest-running #1 of the year, holding the top spot for eight weeks in 2002 and another four in 2003, according to Wikipedia.
