Is there any way to tell if a rear is in useable shape? I received a free 9" that has been sitting outside for 12-15 years. I have to put the brakes back together but thats not what I'm concerned about. If it does need a rebuild, is there a good book that describes how to do it? Thanks guys.

Since the rear is out of the car the only way I would know to check it would be to remove the third member from the housing and inspect it for bad ring gear.
Maybe it's just me, but I'd have the pumpkin rebuilt on general principles. If it's been sitting unprotected for 12-15 years in the elements I wouldn't snap it into the car without a rebuild no matter how freely the pinion turns. I had an 8" 3.55 rear end rebuilt for around $325.
