How to remove ignition cylinder on 1970 Mach 1

My ignition cylinder old and somewhat loose, and I ordered a new one. From looking in the service manual it looks like I need to first remove the steering wheel itself? Is that correct?

If so, do I really need the special puller tool also?

Removed the steering wheel and replaced the ignition cylinder, but there is still play in the movement, so I guess it must be the switch itself that needs adjustment or replacement (this was suggested earlier, but I'm going in the order of least difficulty).

How do I get the cover off of the steering column to get to the actual ignition switch to adjust it? I don't want to crack it by removing it the wrong way, and the service manual doesn't seem to specify. I think it's the trim shroud that needs to be removed? Not sure...

That Harbor Freight puller is actually a universal one mainly made for pulling harmonic balancers. While it may work on some steering wheels it is too wide for others.

As I recall I had to put some lean into the bolts to use it on my '69. I was always worried about stripping or buggering up the steering wheel threads.

After years of using the four fingered style like that I invested the $14.95 on a real steering wheel puller. It was well worth the investment. The right tool for the job and all.

To pull the wheel, you need to remove the center pad (screws found on the back side), remove the center bolt, and attach the puller to the 2 screw holes in the hub of the wheel. Tighten down the puller and the wheel will pop off.

Thanks 22GT. I think from reading the service manual that it's a safe assumption that I do need to remove it to get to the little pinhole to remove the cylinder.

However, so far I'm not seeing any good matches online for pullers appropriate for this car.

Does anyone have a link for a good OEM/replacement puller for a 1970, or a generic one that will do the job for this car? The reviews and q/a on the generic ones are inconclusive.

Thanks!
