I'm corrosponding with a person that knows less than I do on rear ends, and I don't know much. If the ring & pinion has already been taken out of the housing, how do you tell if it came with a posi traction? Especially if the housing isn't the original housing in the first place.

Sorry if this sounds stupid to some of you, but never had much reason to play around with rear ends. Of course swmbo might state differently/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

If it came in it's original housing you could at least read the part number off of the housing to be able to tell, but if the unit has been taken out and placed in another housing, then that way of verifing would be thrown out.

Just curious if there are any way of telling by looking at the unit itself or maybe some internal part numbers? Like I said, I know nothing!/forums/images/icons/blush.gif

The housing is pretty much just a housing, it will or did hold a posi or a locker or an open chunk. The part number of the housing is the same on all three types. No way to know.

you know nothing but you own more fixer cars than you've driven in your life? LOL

Word to yo mutha.

the easiest way to tell if you are looking at a traction lok unit or an open rear end with the unit out of the car is to look at the bolts that hold the ring gear onto the its housing if they are flush and not set into the housing then it is an open if the bolts are recessed into the housing then it is a traction lok. that is how i tell. may not be accurate 100 percent of the time but it hasnt failed me yet.

Housings are eights or nines. Center chunks, when out of the housings can be ID'd by the ring gear bolts only. If the bolts are recessed 3/8 inch it is a factory posi. This holds true for eights or nines. Also if you can NOT get a socket and ratchet on the lower center section bolts, then it is a nine.
