leaving the key on is mute when you have a battery kill switch which you turn off whenever you leave the vehicle.
If I'm going to remember use a kill switch in my garage, I'll probably remember to take the keys with me too. Lol

And no one likes resetting the clock 😉.

That may be tough. I have several that work well most of he time but wont do a thing with a dead battery.
I had to get out the old sears on 2 wheels to get a charge in the last dead one i had
your best bet might be to get a small maintainer they usually have a plug on the cord so you can hard wire a cord to your battery and just plug it in when parked.
And then you forget to unplug the hardwired charging cable from the charger when you leave and ….
Ask me how I know. Think lawn tractor.

leave the hood open works for cars and most tractors

I prefer to at least 2 battery chargers in case one doesn't work or more than one battery needs charging for whatever reason.

The next battery charger I get may be one void of any smart functions since I have seen batteries that were dead as a door nail only come back with a manual type charger to get them going.

I have this charger from Harbor Freight for a spare and for the John Deere lawn tractor. It works great on the cars too when needed.

4 Amp Fully Automatic Microprocessor Controlled Battery Charger/Maintainer

The other one I have is a Schumacher which I think is this one and it works really well even though its controls are a bit funky.

A PerTronix Ignitor (P-I) could cook, if it was on and was in a position for dwelling the coil (like closed points). Often, the coil is the first to fry, especially on direct feed. A P-II or P-III won't cook in that situation, even without the resistor wire or ballast. Whatcha runnin'? And, yes, agreed to let it at least top-off on an auto-charger, or boost after a trickle, before dumping high amps into it with the alternator. Nicer for your alternator stuff also. Good luck!

I would say ‘yes’, but I’ll defer to Yoda
Buzzing in my ears gets worse when my blood pressure gets up....which it does when I realize I left my key on all night.

Im not running the pertronix off the coil. Its an older Ignitor 1 powered from the solenoid with a relay. Standard power wire with resitor to the coil still. Coil is a pertronix flamethrower 1.5 ohm.

I took it for a short drive last night and all seemed fine. Battery was a 12.6v before starting. At idle it's charging steady at 14.5v which is where it was before all this.

You’re not an idiot, you’re human. I covet my car today, but as a young forgetful know nothing, I once left the key in the ignition. Off position but parked out front of my parents house. It was a safe neighborhood but my dads work truck parked in the driveway had its window broken and his briefcase stolen (papers and calculator, he was a surveyor) a week before (which had never happened before). I woke up panicked because the keys to my 65’ Mustang were missing and we’d had a burglary a week before. Luckily it was just as I left it when I realized the keys were in it. But a soft lesson was learnt to a hard consequence. Lucky for you, the car doesn’t have 8 million modules that would die if they saw 2V. These old “Stangs” are forgiving like that.

I could never get one-wire GM alternators to work right for some reason. I don’t know what I was (or wasn’t) doing, but I got tired of screwing around with them and went the 3G route. I seriously need to study up on electrical, that’s my (admittedly) weak link in this chain

Unless you have other no stock things drawing power the stock alt works fine on mine charges 14.2 just like it is supposed to do

I wont advocate for one or the other, but you can take a look at my set-up next time. Its actually pretty simple.
