Kill / Cutoff Switch

Hey all!

I was wondering if anyone has had experience installing a kill / cutoff switch on their Mustang. I have a '65 289 that was stolen and recently found. Specific questions:

1. Can you recommend a specific brand of switch?
2. Is it possible to route the ignition coil to cut power there as well?
3. Where would you recommend I install the switch?

Thanks!!

With a stock ignition and mechanical fuel pump, there's not much way to use a kill switch effectively, since you can jumper the coil to battery power, hit the "S" post with a screwdriver to the + post and the engine is up and running. The kill switch won't be discovered until much later, when it's tucked away in a garage somewhere.

If you have an electric fuel pump, you can put a switch on it. If you have a Pertronix or MSD setup, you could put a kill switch on them, provided it gets its power from inside the car (where the switch would be) and not from the regular ignition wire.

How about removing the rotor under the distributor cap ?? Or remove the coil wire & hiding it ?? Doubt if a theif would bring a rotor or coil wire w/ them.

We use the cigarette light as a kill switch. once switch is installed, you simply push lighter in car will not start, push in again and your on your way. We thought most would not look at the cigarette lighter.

IMO you can do one of three things: (1) get a battery cutoff switch and an effective hood locking device, (2) fuel cutoff valve, or (3) brake pedal locking device.

Option 3 has the advantage of being very visible. The other two options gives you the possibility that the thief will hack around on your car before getting discouraged.

Don't bother with the Club. You will end up with a stolen car AND a ruined steering wheel.

If somebody is smart enough and wants it bad enough they'll get it. They can just back a tow truck or hauler up to it and drag it off. Thats what Chip Foose's hit squad does when they go get a vehicle.

A secret in line gas cut off switch might be the best, easiest, simplest and sneakiest way. Something like a motorcycle gas tank switch would work or a nitrous solenoid would be a fancier electric switch. A thief might get it cranked and a couple of blocks until the carb runs dry and thats it.

I liked Mad Max's cut off switch. It was plastic explosive, LOL. If you didn't switch it off it blew the gas tank and everything else.

answer: trunk monkey

seriously, use layers of protection - kill switch, alarm, brake lock (visible deterrent)

but as said, if they want it - it's gone. Problem w/ these cars is they aren't a dime a dozen, so it's more likely that the thief is looking for your car - not just to steal "a" car

I think the trunk monkey approach offers timely justice; however, any info on the gas cutoff switch or valve would be helpful.

Years ago, someone sold a key operated gas valve that mounted through the floor of the car. You turned it off and took the key. If you installed it close to or under a seat it was usually not noticed. Anyone seen one in recent years?

What about the "Trans-Lock" approach? I saw them in the late '60's and early '70's. Is anyone making them now?

Thanks for the info.

do they make fake coil wires?
the person would try to start the car and not be able to figure out why its not getting spark.
That's been done using windshield washer hose.

A friend of mine put a battery kill switch into the triangular void that's under the 65-6 battery tray interruppting the ground to the block. You almost had to be under the car, in the right place to see there's something there. You can interruppt the power, but the positve cable to the solenoid is so short it's easy to spot if it's changed. With no ground, nothing's going to work, not even running a jump wire to the coil (unless of course they have a spare jumper cable to rig up a ground). They would otherwise assume the battery is dead.

You want to put a kill switch on the neg side of the coil. Open to run closed to kill

Pretty strainght forward, I will get stangrestorer to post a followup or PM. He has installed all of them at our shop so far. This will not stop the guy who truly wants your car and comes witha trailer or rollback, but it is pretty neat first layer of protection.
