I was in the middle of aligning the front fenders on my 1968 Mustang fastback when the caged square nut that holds the front fender at the bottom of the car broke lose. Anybody ever had this happen and how did you fix it? I was going to try and tack weld the nut back into the hole but I am wondering if there is another fix?

They don't stay in place that well. That's why people weld them into place. You can tilt them and insert them into the hole. They just kind of hang there until you bolt the fender. Just slowly thread the bolt.

I tacked a new nut in 4 places when I had mine up on the rotisserie. Even under the car its fairly easy. No doubt there are other methods...but why bother if you have a welder? 5 minutes and done.

Welding?? Ford build millions of cars using those caged nuts. If the sheet metal aren't damaged, the nut will pretty easily click in and stay. The guys at the assembly line didn't have time to be careful, the fender was quickly placed on the car and bolts mounted with a power tool. The caged nuts are designed for that. Other car brands use similar types caged nuts that are angled into the hole and clicked into place with a tiny amount of force. Think I usually just put a screwdriver through the threaded hole in the nut and twist in a little.
