Opionions needed ... tacky or cool?

I have searched and searched and can't seem to find any 408 emblems to go on Scary's Hood Scoop. They make a 302 one, just like the original 351 and 428 emblems (daughter has them on her scoop), but no one is making one that says 408 that I can find (seems like this is a popular enough swap nowadays that it would be cost justified).

I think the hood scoop looks plain without emblems on the sides. I've contemplated putting a 351 emblem on, but part of me says, I paid for and built a 408, I want to brag a little about it.

Keeping with the color scheme of the car, silver with black apointments, we were talking about it at a show last weekend, and I'm now thinking of having some good quality decals made. Just a 408, in a decent font, black, and about the size of the original 351 emblems.

How would that look on the sides of the scoop ... cool or tacky?

I say try them John and see how they look? If you you don't like them, just peel them off!

My 02 cents.

IMO, if it matters, because it's all about personal taste (how's that for a disclaimer?) :D , I'm not a big fan of stickers or decals. Around here, they scream redneck or ricer. I'd find an airbrush artist and do the 408 in the exact form of an old 351 badge. I'm sure you have plenty more airbrushing people out there than we do here.

I don't know how much they cost, but what about getting 2 428 emblems and 2 302 emblems and making your own 408 emblem.

I don't have a problem with vinyl decals if done tastefully, I figure they are easier to fix or replace than paint. You just don't want to go overboard with them and look like a rolling sticker show. :p

I say have them painted on by a good pinstriper. Always looks good and if you really don't like it, they can come right off.

Definitely go with an airbrushed 408. It will look great whether it is on the Hood scoop or lower fender just get a cool looking font and pick a color that goes with the color of your car.Nothing Gawky just something simple and nice looking. Mike

I'd have to agree. This would be the most original, non-tacky.

John:

How about using a "409" emblem and close up the "9" to make it an "8"? Keep the bow tie guys guessing!! Either that, or go metric....6.6 liter(more or less) is what mid to late '70's Firebirds with the 403 motor used.

I like the hand painted idea. You could always re-clear the scoop to protect it once you know you want to keep it.

Or Instead of a decal you could have a stencil made and spray it on in a mat finish. You could cut one out of mat black craft paper to see how it would look before making the commitment.

Well John, sorry to say but you should have thought ahead. I believe I've seen 427 emblems for the mach scoop and there is a 427W stroker kit available soooooo, pull the 408, get the 427W kit and your emblems. It's only money.

I believe I saw a 351 stroker hood emblem at Sacramento Mustang Parts for $25 ea. That is one option. Maybe it said 351 hiperformance. hmm.

On the other hand, find someone artistic, or try yourself, to sketch out a 408 emblem dimensionally the same as the 302 and with the same kind of lettering. Take it to a metal fabricators and get them to cut out two emblems, left and right. From there, you can have it chrome-plated. Alternatively, get them cut out of stainless steel and just polish em up. They'd look factory. You could have the shop make 4 or 5 sets, then take the extra sets and eBay them to get your money back and make some coin. Hey, I forgot, you have $900 of insurance money to play with! :p I say get them custom made and chrome plate them. There is a metal fabricators shop off of Harbor, in West Sac, that I've gone to in the past with success. This is the shop that machined a rocker pedestal bushing for me. I think it is something like "Action blah blah blah"

The next would be airbrushing, with a decal being the last choice. Definitely add something to the hood scoop!

I vote for nothing. If you must advertise, I'd go with having some custom made, just like the factory ones. I'd pass on the stickers or airbrush idea, unless you're doing side tube exhaust and extra long shackles or air shocks!!!

How's your mullet?!

Hi John
You know it doesn't really matter what the rest of us clowns like or do not like, it only matters what you like. Everyone is going to have a different opinion on this matter so you still won't know what you should or should not do. If it fells right and you like it do it.
