OK, working on my coupe and I have to replace the panel, drilled the spot welds on the bottom and now I am at the ends where it meets the Qrt. Panel, how do you drill the spot welds out at that spot to remove the panel, it looks like the part of the qrt. panel is over the tail panel.

the quarter panel overlaps and sort of 'pinches' the panel at the upper corners of the trunk opening. You'll need to drill out the 2 spot welds in the flat portion of the panel and 2 on the vertical, then peel them apart- they're not welded other than that. the 2 x's in the pic are where the spot welds are- 2 more where the arrows are

Maybe I don't understand correctly, but all you should have to do it drill those spot welds out.... there is a little bit of brazing at the edge of the trunk corner piece which creates a smooth transition to the top of the tail light panel.

Here is a pic of mine after welding in the tail light panel and corner extension(original was 2-piece, replacement is 1-piece)

How did you separate the rear panel from the qrt. panel?

The part of the quarter over top of the tail light panel is indeed over top the tail light panel. It is actually a separate piece from the quarter panel. Just drill through the spot welds that attach it to the tail light panel and you will be fine. These will get filled back in when you weld the tail light panel back in place.

Do you have a new tail light panel to look at so you know exactly what you are replacing?

yes, I have a new panel, I have never done body work before so I want to be careful not to screw up the qrt. panel, so I just drill right through the welds and it should come out right? I have thought about cutting up the old panel into smaller pieces so I can get to the other area's I need to get to, my Boss, says that sometimes I do over think things:}0

as they say, 1 thing leads to another, I always thought something was up with the L/R of my coupe, now that I have the panel off I can see that the P/O had changed the outer skin on it, and just rigged the wheel housing on it, time to fix it right.

Now I have a hole in it,

I had a shop do my Fastback, But I am doing my coupe this time, learn as you go:)

I just ground it down or cut it when I did it my tail light panel, you should be able to do the same on this wheel well repair.

I used a cutting wheel to gently grind it down.

I learned as I went on my car.... I am not scared to replace anything on these cars now. It's not nearly as difficult as I imagined. Just have to get past that fear of screwing something up. It's only money if you do, right? lol

well, I went to Mustang Plus and picked up the new wheel housing, surprised they had the part, while I was there, I stopped in the Restomod Shop and talked to the shop foreman, he said to heat it up and split it apart, I had heard somewhere about heating it up but was not sure about it, they really put the blazing on, going to try and heat it up, if that does not work out come the grinder again:thumbsup:

OK, got the old wheel housing out and the new one cut down to fit, boy what a bitch, 8 p.m. at night and it was still 100 degrees out:wtf:

trimmed the new housing 3 times to get the right fit

question, on the bottom where it meets up with the existing body, the body runs long and the well is short, should I trim the body to make it look better?

here is my welder, where should the setting be for the welder and the gas? also I am using 0.35 wire, is that correct

Yeah, you can plug weld them ( make a hole in one of the panels, make sure everything sits where it should, and fill the hole with weld ).
If you havent plug welded before, I suggest you do a couple of practice runs on som scrap metal.

Use seam sealer after welding, to seal things up.

btw, if you want to avoid bare metal around the welds, use some weld-thru primer.
This is a primer that wont burn away from welding, and protect the areas around the weld that you cant get to afterwards.

OK, so it has been awhile since I been working on the coupe, I installed the light panel and tacked the bottom to where the bumper holes were originally, I am having a hard time getting the trunk to latch and the trunk to seal, I think I need to break the tack welds and move the panel up and the latch mount up some also, does anyone have any pictures of the inside of the rear panel and the trunk latch? How do you line everything up to make sure it is correct?

OK, It has been awhile but final got back on it, now that is not 30degree's outside, broke the welds loose and reset the panel, just screwed in place right now, still need to get the L/S Qrt. Ext.

little by little it's getting there, any thoughts on how it looks, this is my first time at body work.

Hi, I realise this is an old post but you swapping out a 66 for a 67 rear panel?
