Tech question about traction bars

I have the traction master underrides and as I was pulling the engine today I noticed that the rubber bushings at the traction bars were starting to shred and come out.
As I've been thinking about rollerizing the parts up front that I haven't done yet, I wondered if you could rollerize the rear bars and if so would it be worth the time and effort?

Any ideas?

Mark,

Not necessary, the amount of rotation is insignificant. Press in a bushing, just like your front spring eye.

Unfortunately, this type of traction bar introduces unwanted bind to the suspension. Consider a decoupled traction device, like CalTrac.

They do bind without a doubt....here's what mine looked like after running hard on the 65 for maybe 20 drag launches over 3 years.

However, for street duty they worked/are fine IMO. I have seen

Also, here's a decent discussion I had back in '03 when I first installed them (under riders) and was in love with them and wondering why everyone didn't use them ;)

Lastly, I can't find it in my bookmarks, but you can make your 'upgraded' under riders that use the heim joint front and have a damper spring in the middle to eliminate the binding that is possible.

Thanks guys, I didn't think it would help, just wanted some confirmation.

Yes, I know to get rid of them, I knew that would be offered ;)

No panhard bar Tony.

I keep meaning to take them off, but for one reason or another I forget. I'll remove them this winter and hide them from myself!

Or if you really want to go for a wild ride, just take ONE of them off! :pirate: :pirate:

The front bolt to one of mine broke off while driving on our wonderful L.A. city streets. So I took off that bar immediately that day.

Not having time (or the immediate desire) to remove the other one, I ran the 67 as my DD for about a month with one underrider bar. And boy can I tell you, with each bump/pothole/dip I ran over, the rear of the car wanted to kick out on me like MAD!!! :skullnbones:

Knowing what the problem was, I then removed the other one and all is now fine. I actually do like them on the street, so I just need a shop to reweld the front bolt back up so I can put them both back on...

so if I am running my car on the street 97% of the time I will be happy with mine? they are new and only partly installed. I could trade them for something else pretty quick if I wanted to but I think I like the idea of having them. Didn't the Shelby use them? I thought he did.

I've been happy with the way the car handles with the under rides on the street, but for the track, it's my understanding that running without them will be better....how.....I'll find out in April ;)

Panhard bars or watts links do nothing to control wheel hop.

The reason to have traction bars is to control rear axle hop (windup) on acceleration and/or braking.

If you didn't know this then you don't need them anyway. ;)

I did know that, that's why I originally put them on. With new springs though, it might not hop anyway.....at least I've read that.

It will be fun to see the difference come spring time with the bars off!
