I have a 66 mustang with a 289, I want to put a toploader four speed in it. I found one and ran the numbers at david kee's website and it says its out of a 67-69 fairlane or ranchero with 390, 28-spline. Will this fit in my mustang? Will it be a pretty good performance transmission?
Thanks

I think the tailshaft will be longer than a Mustang, and possibly the mounting points for the shifter will have to be moved. Not sure of input/output shaft diameters and number of splines, but I believe they are different than a small block as well.

I have a 4 speed for sale, from a 67 GT. I've checked out all the gears and they are all in great condition. It's at my parents place right now, I can get tag numbers if you like.

It will fit your car perfectly, as it was behind a low mileage 289 HiPo. All it needs is new front/rear/top seals, fluid and it's ready to go. It doesn't come with linkage or shifter or bellhousing.

$700 plus shipping. It'll be stretch wrapped and strapped on a pallet.

Where are you located? I'll get a shipping quote for you.

What are the numbers on the tailshaft housing? That will tell the whole story. David Kee has an area to decifer those as well. He's got a great site. There's a very good chance that this trans will bolt right in as is. Alot of the smaller input shaft pre 70's torino, etc.,non Galaxie 4 speeds bolt right into Mustangs.

toploader

where are you located? I have a couple of small block Toploaders as well that I will be off loading and will eventually be looking to get one for a 390. My '67 was an S Code from the factory and I am trying to put it back that way.

You have a big block toploader

It is true that your transmission will bolt up with a spacer for the pilot bushing but be aware that you need to buy big block clutches, which means you are stuck with 11" clutches. Your input shaft will be 1 3/8" not 1 1/16".

I have one in my car but I have a custom input shaft that's a little longer so I don't have to deal with the bushing which I always hated. The good news is that if you are going to drag race, you will never twist the input shaft on a BB toploader and I know people that have twisted input shafts on SB toploaders. If you are not going with power or to drag race its probably overkill.

I love my toploader - they take a beating and keep on tick'n. You can change the input shaft to a small block toploader and its all the same. Again, not sure about the tailshaft dimension.

The best part about a toploader is being able to say you have one in your car - its the essence of hotrodding...

Toploaders are super easy to work on - don't be intimidated if you have any skills.

thank you all for being so helpful. I am in knoxville tn.

Id really like just a bolt in. the guy thats selling this trans only wants 500 and it comes with the shifting linkage and mechanizm. I'm just not sure if it will fit. I'm having a aweful time trying to get this 77 3 speed O/D to fit.
David Kee lists a 66 mustang as one of the cars when I look up the tailshaft numbers. what is the number of splines? Is this the amount of teeth that are in the tailshaft that the yoke has to mesh with?

it looks like by the tag numbers it is 67-69 and the tail housing is the same the only difference is that the 66 has 28 spline and the big block fairlane etc.. has a 31 spline. the case is dated to 67-69 so I am assuming that the tailhousing will be the one from that year too in which case it was for big blocks. is this a pain or expensive to change?

I'll run the numbers on the two that I have and let you know what they are for. I may be interested in that Big Block Toploader.

I have heard that those "special" pilot bushings to adapt the big block trans to small blocks tend to fall out...However having said that some of the 390 trans did not have the short snout on the imput shaft so they should work fine with the small block..
