Until which year the Mustang is considered a classic?

I have always known that 1964 1/2-1973 are all considered Classic Mustangs.

Some books like THE MUSCLE CAR COLOR HISTORY from Motorbooks International claim that the Mustang after the 1968 model year THE ORIGINAL SILHOUETTE of the car rode off to the sunset.

Others say that up until 1970 the mustang was a classic and that 1971-73 models deviated from the original pony car.

What do you guys and gals think??

I consider the whole first generation (65-73) as classic.

1966 only, no exceptions....

Okay, by strict definition, any car made after 1948 cannot be considered a "classic" by the snooty Classic Car Club of America, who claims to have invented the term, and only a portion of cars made during that time qualify. They actually have a list of cars that they consider classic.

My personal definition is a car that is at least 30 years old, and has appreciated in value enough to be worth much more than it's original cost. A car that can be easily recognized by sight, and a car that has an owner's group that meets either physically or virtually for support and information and form clubs for the same purpose.

By this definiton, I include all Mustangs from 65 through 78 equally. At some point, I believe the Fox cars will get into this catagory as well.

Most state DMVs and insurance companies consider any car 20+ years old "classic" and 25+ "antique".

I agree, up to 1973.

The term "classic" is too general and will have different definitions depending on the circumstances. For example, most people consider that the Muscle car era ended in '72, so won't allow the '73's into their car shows, even though the '73 Mustang is very similar to the '72.

I've always gone by the definition most DMV's use, and say anything over 20 years old is a classic.

The statement of "Some books like THE MUSCLE CAR COLOR HISTORY from Motorbooks International claim that the Mustang after the 1968 model year THE ORIGINAL SILHOUETTE of the car rode off to the sunset." is simply rediculous to me. If you're going to go by that definition, only the '65/'66 are classics, as they changed the sihouette in '67.
