What happened to 92 Octane??

I have noticed a little while ago that 92 octane is now 91 octane. They are going the wrong way! My poor mustang needs that 92 (or higher, I vote for 100 octane :) ) to run ping free. What are our oil companies doing to us? They lower gas prices then lower the quality of gas, uh, that's not right. I wouldn't mind paying $1.80 - $2.00 bucks a gallon if they gave me the same quality gas (wasn't the highest grade, 93 octane around not too many years ago?).

Thoughts, gripes, overall anythings. And I do live in California, so paying $1.60 - $1.70 for the super duper crap (91) is not uncommon.

I guess since the effort to kill off the old cars failed in california there next plan is to starve you out. After reading your post i'm re-invigerated to check out CNG (Compressed natural gas). CNG is 130 octane! It costs a grand but you can get a filler to run off your gas pipe at home and fill your car overnight. Another upside is you don't pay road tax on your fuel since you fill it at home with home heating fuel. While i'm in austalia i'm checking out LPG (propane) which is similar but needs to use a different mixture ratio. The other thing prompting me on is the fact in atlanta alternative fuel vehicles can use the car pool lane. Imagine the cop pulling over a 67 mustang convertible running 13:1 compression for running solo in the car pool lane and you legally tell him to flip off. :)

You can get 94 octane at Sunoco in Pittsburgh PA for 1.43 a gallon.

A couple of Sunoco stations in my area sell what they call racing Fuel at 103 octane but it's NOT cheap, the Amish around here use it in their buggies. Man, do those horses fly. OZ.

Seems like not too long ago you guys were suffering the 93 to 92 octane drop! I gotta get moving on my new motor build out, this almost 11.1 compression is not gonna work when the trend migrates to my part of the world.

You can still get 93 octane here in VA. (Waynesboro) at places like Amoco and BP. I think Citco at 7-11 sell's it also. My mildly built 302 runs fine on it. Right now its about $1.45 a gallon.

I noticed that too. Now I buy about a 3/4 tank of the 91 octane and top it off with 110 octane leaded racing fuel. No pings-no cat (It's an 86)

If you can remember the 60's, you weren't really there.

I've experienced a noticeable improvement by using Chevron gas. A little cleaner performance from your car. I used to only run Union76 then made the switch. The Mustang doesn't sniff low quality gas.
Always 92....now 91. Time to stock up on Octane boost.

Ah ha! Another Californian. I noticed the same thing about two weeks ago. My local unfriendly Beacon station had brand new "91 octane" stickers on the premium pumps. My first thought was "WTF!" Anyway, I checked at a couple of the premium brand stations and it was the same story. My 302 Mustang is only a 9.5 : 1 compression ratio, so it runs fine on 87 octane crap but my Z28 likes the high test and the 91 leaves something to be desired. My 351W SportsRoof is 10.7 : 1 and I have no idea if it will even run on the 91 stuff. It was having a hard enough time with the 92.

Here in WV we have both 91 and 93, both the same price, some places sell 91, others 93, so I have all the 93 stations memorized, both cars knock with anything less. Luckily, this week the cheapest premium is a 93 octane station at 1.51/gal.
