Hi All,

I've been trying to figure out a horrible screeching sound for a month now. Belts, alternator, power steering pump all changed yet noise remains. The great folks on this site suggested wheel bearings, which I have on order. I've also ordered new rotors (front disc) because, well why not!. I checked the bearings and they do seem fine but I'll replace when I can. Doesn't make the noise when stopped or idling or revving and it seems it may be road surface dependent.

I just replaced the front tyres. Both were badly worn on the inside edge so I know an alignment is needed. The noise seems to have reduced since I replaced the tyres...but that could be my wishful thinking.

Today I took the car for a drive so I record the sound and get your very appreciated advise. Sorry its a long video!

Hopefully the link works

Cheers
Grant

Couple of things to check would be an alignment problem as stated when tires warm up they appear to be wonky somehow!. Since it appears where you live, these are not a common car , maybe lacking in their ability to set up the front end properly!

I had a similar screeching sound that turned out to be a vacuum leak from my intake manifold. It sounded like a squealing fan belt. How about getting in a safe area, and when the noise starts, put the car in neutral and shut off the engine. That would at least eliminate engine and transmission (but not rear end). Also, I've heard U-joints that were noisy, but they generally made a clicking noise.

Well right off the bat your tires are rubbing and you said you need an alignment...plus that noise seems to get worse when you go around a corner. So that's probably the issue. What size wheels are you running?

Difficult to hear from the video. Do you have a GoPro or any action cam you can mount at different locations to "see" and "hear" the noise. Can help to pin down the location (engine bay, lift or right wheel, ect.) Do you have power steering? If yes, is everything setup properly?

1 or more wheel bearings going dry maybe. That other constant whirring noise that is not so loud sounds like bearings too or maybe something in the third member which has a bunch of bearings also. When they are dry they will squeal louder as you roll down the highway more because they get hot. That would also explain why it only makes these noises when you are rolling.

Well, for starters, you're driving on the wrong side of the road. HAHA!! Just kidding!
I'm still thinking it sounds like a wheel bearing is shot. I also don't think I would drive it any more until I pulled the wheels and inspected and / or changed them so you don't ruin a spindle. I had one make a noise like that as a youth on my way home from a date, and it was far enough that by the time I made it home the inner bearing had gotten so hot it welded itself to the spindle and it had to be split to get it to come off.

Hi All,

A lot of people said alignment issue so I decided to replace the passenger side tie rods (inner & outer) today. The driver side was done recently (I know I should have done the lot at the same time but didn't realise I had the parts buried in the shed until the other day). I have to get everything from the U.S which takes weeks :-(

All went well until I found that the new inner tie rod bolt & nut were a different size to the old one. I have double checked the part (bought from CJ Pony Parts about a year ago) and it should be for a 1966 V8 with power steering but as the new one is a smaller size bolt & nut I wonder if its really for a straight 6. I test fit it to the center link but it seems like there would be too much play to be safe AND the cotter pin would be way higher than the new castle nut if it was tightened down, although the unthreaded shaft of the bolt does seem like it would be ok.

Do I have the wrong part ?

Hard to know from a photo but they do look like the 6 cylinder ones to me or something that is smaller than what you need. Getting the wrong parts from a supplier is part of the fun of working on an old mustang,,,,,unfortunately.

If it were the outers you could have an early mustang new tie rod and a brake conversion using a later spindle like 70 or 71. The outer tie rod bolts were larger on the later ones. I did this exact disc conversion on my car and I forever now have to remember to get outer tie rods for a 70 model car. This issue is only the outer ones though so it doesn't work that way on the inner ones.

Cheers - Its fun, but I having to wait 7-10 days or more for a delivery is very frustrating.

Hopefully the parts I have ordered (this time from rockauto) will be what I need and I can finally close the investigation into the weird noise

Fixed!!

The new outer, inner tie rod & sleeve arrived today and as it had stopped raining I got straight into it.

Replaced the both tie rods on the passenger side and did a 'home' alignment using some jack stands and some string. Set the toe in at about 3mm and went for a drive. The sound is gone!!!!

I'm sure it needs to be properly aligned but just having the sound gone is good enough for me at present. As is always the case, the simplest solution is probably the correct one. At least the car has new belts, power steering pump & alternator :)

Thanks to everyone for their comments and advise.

Now on to find why the new 1 wire alternator doesnt actually charge the battery ;-)

Glad you got it worked out.
