... a leaking C4 transmission dipstick tube? I've ordered a new one, but it just seems as though an o-ring seal is just not enough.

How tight should the tube be in the trans?

Do you put silicon or some other type of sealer on the tube before inserting it in the trans?

I put three quarts of fluid (in a dry trans) and within about 10 minutes it was leaking. The last thing I want is trans fluid all over the freshly painted and detailed undercarriage.

My dipstick tube was similarly loose. I used to butter the end with RTV silicone with good results. Just clean the end of the dipstick tube and the hole in the transmission with laquer thinner and you should get a good bond.

The T-5 was the ultimate cure.

If you're pretty sure that dipstick tube is never coming out again, some JB Weld or other epoxy goop will fix 'er right up. I found with the loose-fitting aftermarket oil pan dipstick tube in my 351C that silicone always popped a leak eventually.

When I had my '66 ATX, I used an additional o-ring, so that there's an o-ring in the recessed groove, and an o-ring sitting against the shoulder of the tube. In my case, that raised the dipstick a tiny bit so the bolt that holds it to the cylinder head wouldn't go in unless I pushed down hard on the tube and compressed the o-ring--that kept it from leaking (at least as badly).
