What's a fully rebuilt AOD worth?

I'm planning on replacing my worn out C-4 with an AOD. I'm pretty sure that I know which model years make the best donors. I have seen some of these listed on eBay by rebuilders and they seem to be going for about $500-$600. Is this a good price? How much would one cost if I found it in a salvage yard and paid someone to rebuild it?

I am also considering this swap.

New ones cost in the area of $1300 with a stock t/c.

A local salvage yard claims they get 700 to 800 for used AOD's.

A couple of rebuilders on the internet advertise rebuild prices of 600 - 800 with a $500 core charge.

I've got 2 calls into rebuilders to get prices on just the transmission.

It looks to me like I may have to find a core and rebuild it myself to be able to justify doing the swap. I mean, you could get your C4 rebuilt for 5 or 6 hundred dollars. You'll have more than that in the cross member, yoke, driveshaft, tv bracketry, etc...and that's before you procure an AOD. It's weird, but it looks to me like it is cheaper to buy a new one than it is to buy a used one and have it rebuilt. Unless, you can find and individual to buy one from. There's that guy in Corral FL on ebay that wants $275 for his. There's a couple on the corral that people are asking 600 to 750 for. It might be cheaper to buy a whole damn car, get what you need, and scrap the rest! You could probably buy a beat to crap 90 5.0 for less than $1000 and sell it for $800 without the transmission.

Just a few ideas. If I come up with any good info from the rebuilders I've contacted, I'll post it.

Hey Phil, it all depends on how much work you're willing to do. If you're willing to go to your local Pick-n-Pull and spend a few hours pulling an AOD, you could have a core for under $150.

The driveshaft will work fine from everything I've read as long as you had a C4 before, and you use the yoke from the AOD (another place where Pick-n-Pull can be helpful).

Also, If you have welding skills, you could always fabricate your own crossmember. It just needs to put the mount back two inches from stock, and if you don't like pulling crossmembers often, clear the AOD's pan so you can service it.

A refurbished AOD was recently sold on eBay for $535 with only a $75 core charge. The place is located in Phoenix, AZ (only 150 miles from my home in Flagstaff) and they specialize in transmission retorations. I was bidding on the AOD but a sniper stole it from me at the last minute. Sounded like a good deal to me though.

Sounds like a good deal to me. You figure from a yard the tranny is going to cost about $150 or so, and then another $150 or so for a rebuild kit, and that's assuming you do all of the labor. Basically $300 for labor then; which isn't bad when you consider the time it'd take to remove the tranny, clean it all up, disassemble, rebuild, etc.

I got lucky and found a guy selling AOD for $50 from a 91 mustang. Younger guy just wanted to get rid of it. Girlfriend said it had to go from her garage floor.
rebuild kit from TCI cost 199. May have a friend rebuild it for $200.
$450 is pertty good in my book.
