Hello,

The wires in my engine bay are getting brittle and worn. I would like to replece them this winter.

Question: Can I just replace the wires in the engine bay (just plug them into the existing harnes at the firewall) or do I have to take them all the way under the dash and re-wire everything?

I would like to replace the engine wires and the alternator wires. Any idea what specifically I should ask for for a 66 Mustang and is there a difference in quality?

Thanks, Greg.

Check out the various catalogs (NPD, Dallas, Virginia Mustangs, etc) for wiring harnasses. There are some for just the engine compartment.
Good luck.

Hello Greg:

The two main engine compartment wiring harnesses have
'bulkhead' connectors at the firewall. You can buy repro
harnesses with the correct wire lengths, connectors and even
wire colors. I bought my new harnesses from Virginia Classic
Mustang and the quality was excellent. I hope that other Mustang parts supplies carry the same high quality harnesses. For '66, you're looking for the 'Firewall to Headlamp' harness (front end lighting, charging system, starter relay connections, horns) and the 'Firewall to Engine
Gauge Feed' harness (oil & coolant sending units, heater fan, ignition coil primary, etc.) Also, there is a small 'Alternator' Harness which connects directly to the alternator terminals.
This harness then connects to the first harness mentioned.

Remember to clean both the male & female connections on the 're-used' firewall bulkhead connectors. A little oxidation will increase resistance in the circuits and cause problem.

Good Luck,

Paul

Amazing timing on your question Greg. I'm looking for those exact two harnesses for my 66 as well. Last night I sent an E-mail to Matt at Ponderosa Mustang to see if he had them and how much $$$. I'll let you know what I find out as soon as he responds. If you find a good deal, please let me know via PM. Thanks

They come as 4 different kits. One is for the engine and one for the alternator. It sounds like you do not need the other 2 kits. I re wired my 65 convertible a couple of years ago. At that point I bought from Mustangs Unlimited ( I think they are in Delaware, sorry can't remember). I was impressed with quality. However, they are not cheap. good luck. doug

I highly recommend replacing the alternator harness, the gauge engine harness, and the headlight harness under the hood. The repro harnesses are excellent quality, and you can replace them all in about an hour. I did mine by removing one connector at a time, so I couldn't go wrong!

The most difficult is the headlight harness, which actually routes below the radiator. You'll need to tie a string to the existing one so you can pull the new one through.

Greg (white66coupe1), sounds like a great deal. This was your post, so these harnesses are all yours if you want them. But ... if you choose not to please let me know. I'd love them! Thanks
