Posting seemed to ask for a title, a second time so it seems I posted twice.

 

Really hard to hear what it is doing. Sounds like Something might be hitting the bell housing. I would rotate it by hand and see it it hangs up or bangs.

 

If it's a "starter from the 60s" but a "5.0" (which I assume that means roller camshaft, later model 302), the # of teeth on the flywheel are different, and that is probably your problem.

 

What type of starter is it?
Is it the new style PMGR with solenoid mounted on top?

That starter sounds perfectly normal to me.

 

I said I'm using an old style starter, I was wrong. It is for a late 80's 5.0 but looks like the large starters I've dealt with in the past. Advance Auto Parts - Down for Maintenance And the flywheel is a 157 tooth M-6375-B302

Funny, When I installed my T5 w/ scattershieild I went and bought a "manual" starter. Turns out it needs an automatic starter. I forgot this when I replaced the starter last year...I will never forget again. Moral? I guess it depends which one you need.

That is the correct starter for a 157T flywheel or flexplate. It was commonly called the "automatic" starter but it is correct for the 157T "manual" flywheel.
It sounds perfectly normal to me.

 

Update, took the starter back to Advance Auto to test and it sounded fine there. The guys at advanced suggested Shimming the starter. Did so and it solved the problem.
