Wondering if anyone has tried the new '65/'66 Tri-Y Headers from Paul's Automotive Engineering that are billed as a larger header that looks original--and are advertised as adding up to 35 HP? If you haven't tried them, what do you think of the following:

They're practically dead-ringers as far as looks go--once installed, they say you'd practically have to take a micrometer to be able tell the difference from the top. See if you agree from the stats below:

The original Shelby header had 1 1/2-inch primaries with two 1 3/4-inch secondaries with 2 1/2-inch collectors.

Whereas, the new Paul's Automotive Engineering header has 1 5/8-inch primaries feeding 2-inch secondaries and 3-inch collectors.

A test done on the owner's '65 GT-350 (although it is now a 347 engine) yielded the following: Without the headers the car produced 341.7 rear-wheel horse-power and 343.8 rear-wheel torque on the dyno. With the new headers, those numbers spiked to 377 rwhp (at about 6000 rpms) and 365.5 rwtq (at about 5000 rpms) for an increase of 35 horses and 21.7 lb-ft at the tire.

After studying the comparison table, I culled these figures for more "normalized" driving: At 3500 rpms without the headers, the car produced 206.6 rwhp and 310.1 rwtq. With the headers, at 3500 rpms the car produced 218.6 rwhp and 328.1 rwtq.

Now here's the bad news: these headers sell for $900--so I was wondering if by these stats if you all feel there would be a noticable difference--or do you feel the $900 be better spent elsewhere on the engine?

I'm competing in Concours Driven, so I'm after the stock look--also wondering if you think they'd slide by as far as the the primaries are concerned up top?

Incidentally, all of this can be found in the Feb/03 edition of Mustang Monthly page 36.

Looking forward to your comments. Thank you to all in advance,

Neil

Well...I think $900 is a lot of money for a set of headers. Not a lot of bang for the buck. There are an awful lot of headers out there for a lot less money that will get pretty much that much hp anyway.

Sounded great right up until you got to the price tag! Let's see tried, proven, and race proven ceramic coated Hooker SuperComps or headers from somebody I've never heard of for twice the price. I'll pass, thank you very much.
For you, if tri-Y's will pass judgement, likely you could sneak those through. But jeez, is it still worth it?

$900 is way to much for headders . For a couple dollars more you could but a very nice set of aluminum heads or a bunch or other parts/modifications .

No comment on these headers but if price is no object Cobra Auto sells a set of road race stainless steel headers for $3,900.00
That's right boys and girls 3,900 samolies.

They're been out for some time. Paul actually has Stainless Works market the headers now. The headers are made of high quality Stainless Steel and would probably out last us all. They're beautifully done, but I believe you'd have to have them coated if you want black. Standard finish is natural. Fully polished is a $300 option. In terms of a Judge noticing them, that's your call. Black tends to make things look small/disappear. How many judges would you expect to even know they are available to be looking for them? I'd be surprized if they'd spot them, unless they reading this, but don't make your decision based on my comment. I purchased a complete exhaust system from SW for my BOSS2 car and it was beautifully done. If I was interested in the DC class, but wanted performance, I'd give them a shot.

hooker super comps would get you the same power numbers or close for around 300 bucks..... 900 is outrageous for just headers. you could buy a set of real nice heads for a little more that WILL make that kind of power and then some.

whew 900 for headers. that just breaks the banks for someone poor like me *G*
