Hello, I'm brand new to the site. I looked at some of the other posts, but I would like some reinforcement.

I have a 1970 mach 1 that is currently being restored. I am wanting to put 17 inch wheels on and lower the car, but I do not want to have to roll the fenders as it is already painted. Here is the combo I was thinking.

1) Perform a shelby drop of 1 inch and use lowering springs. I will then cut to the desired height.

2) Get 2 inch lowering rear leafs from Eaton springs. I would like to avoid lowering blocks if possible.

3) Tire size- can I go 8 inch wide up front with 9.5 in back or should I go 8 and 8 or even 7 and 8?

I ideally will have the fender lip eventually sit within one inch of the tire with no rubbing issues.

Any opinions and thoughts are welcomed.

Welcome to VMF. There's no magic. If the front tires rub when you turn and hit a bump you have a problem.

Many cars you see at car shows must be driven almost straight ahead, on smooth roads with no big dips. Not being a poop, that's the way it is! In some cases they may have the rubber suspension bumpers set/size to only allow 1" vertical travel, then have bone jarring stiff springs.

If you go with 8" wide wheels with 4.5" backspacing and 245x45R17 or 235x50R15 tires front and rear, they will fit perfect and you won't have any rub issues. The front will be close if you lower the car a whole bunch.

70 BOSS 302 had 15" wheels 7" wide, with F60-15 tires (equivalent of 225x60R15) and the envelope of that tire is very similar to the 245x45R17. I have 235x60R15 on my 69, with 15x7 Magnums having 4.125" backspacing, and have no rub problems. The 69-70 BOSS 302 had factory rolled (trimmed) fender lips in front, but I have used the original BOSS wheels and tires on a 70 fastback with no special fender treatment and no rubbing.

The 235x60R15 has a section width of 9.5" and height of 26.1"
The 225x60R15 has a section width of 9" and a height of 25.6"
The 245x45R17 has a section width of 9.6" and height if 25.7"

So, you can see that the first and last tires listed are nearly identical in overall size. Either will fit your car perfectly without any rubbing issues.

On my 66 fastback, I had to go to a 7" wide 17" wheel in front and used one size smaller 235x45R17 tire and it does not come close to rubbing even with the car sitting about 2" lower than stock.
