While you're in/at steering column, check and replace if needed t/s assembly if old.
Also since you're at it, condition of upper/lower control arms and shafts?

Probably means the turn signal (TS) switch.

Personally I would put this one in the 'if its not broken dont fix it' catagory. The stock/original switches were well made and provided years (decades) of good reliable service. The repro TS switches on market today are crap. C-R-A-P. Every other guy on this board that replaces their TS switch is posting about no TS lights, no brake lights, lights on that shouldnt be, having to replace the replacement, etc. If your switch is not broken dont replace it.

The drag link / center link is a non wearing part on a manual steer car. Unless yours is damaged, you can delete that from your list.

I couldn't find a new/rebuilt steering box in NPD's catalog? Likewise for the steering column tube bearing. Help? Please? I'm not much of a steering guy, much more engine oriented. And I know there are a lot of things that changed mid-year so I'm afraid I'm going to get it wrong.

Have your box rebuilt by the Mustang Barn. Fast turnaround, and good pricing on the parts, too.

 

There's Some stuff you can relook on your list. Steering wheel puller (rent one maybe)
Steering wheel (looking for OEM one or a new aftermarket one?).

I see the gasket above, but do you have the gaskets that go on the column inside your car on the list?

 

The 3590-2 Pitman is a 1 1/8" pitman. There is a very good chance your pitman is a 1".

I just went through the same thing on my early '67. Since NPD does not specify exactly from whom they source the tie rods, I would recommend buying Moog inner and outers and sleeves from somewhere so you know what you are getting (I got mine from Amazon and they were cheaper than anywhere else).

I do plan to change the turn signal switch as mine has trouble cancelling and the hazards don't work right.

Is there any way I can tell if I have a 1" or 1 ?" sector shaft? Obviously measuring it but an eighth of an inch is too hard to tell.

I'll look into having my box rebuilt as it appears that's my only option

I want an OEM wheel as I plan on putting all the original horn stuff back together eventually.

Any help on the bearing and other questions?

 

Early '67 cars, which you have, all have the 1" sector (up until about May of '67). I'm going through this right now with my '67, and trust me; if you have the ability to replace/service the box while the engine is out, do it. With the integral shaft boxes, it's pretty much impossible to remove them with the engine in the car. Sad face.

 

It's still got the tag, I'll check it next time I'm around the car. I'm guessing it's 1" from the sound of things.

Also, I saw Mustang Barn sells new boxes so I'll probably just buy one of those. For the cost to ship my box both ways plus the cost of a rebuild isn't much less than a new box. Especially shipping these boxes with the long shaft.

So anything else I'm missing guys? I'm more concerned about the stuff to rebuild my column because there's so many small parts. Anywhere I can find the bearing?

67 Non Tilt is a one off bearing, it is not reproduced. Your only luck is finding NOS or reusing your own. I am in the same situation.

If you do break down your column, can you take pics as you go? I am trying to rebuild one as well but got mine already dissasembled. I am mainly interested to see if there are any c-clips on the shaft above/below the column to tube bearing.

I don't think I'll be of much help. Over the course of the 13 years I've owned my car, I've had the column apart several times and to be honest, I don't know if I've ever reassembled it correctly, haha. It's been good enough to drive with but it's been kinda clunky and I've never tried hooking the horn stuff back up again. I'm hoping the new box will fix the "clunkiness" because it was appear I'm SOL if it's the column bearing.

I do own the Ford assembly manuals and the Ford Shop Manual. I haven't looked up anything steering related in them yet but they've been invaluable to me in the past for other things. These are manuals written by Ford back in the day so you know they're correct and not Joe Ratchethead writing a blog. You can get them from most Mustang parts vendors, I got mine from NPD.

 

If it helps, and maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recollect ever taking any C-clips out of the column. It's been a while though and alcohol has killed many brain cells.
