Hi all. Does anyone know what the quietest mufflers Flowmaster has to offer for a 68 big block?
I had 44s on the car when I got it. Far too loud.
I put Delta flow 50s on it. Still too loud.
I like Quiet ...

By Flowmaster's own chart, the Delta 50's are on the quiet end. If they're too loud, I'd go with a "turbo" muffler. My muffler of choice is the Walker Super Turbo, give you a nice performance sound without being obnoxious.

Now I don’t have a BB Ford but built up a 3 inch exhaust all the way out the rear facilitating my Coyote. I went with the larger Flowmaster Super 40s. Ran it several times on open headers. When I finished the exhaust, I swore, at an idle, all I had accomplished was moving the noise back 7 ft or so…. 😜. Still TBD but a muffler change or possible resonators could be in my future.. I do like it though. But yes, a vert would need to be much quieter.

You will never get "quiet" with any Flowmasters. Most aftermarket performance mufflers are not designed to be quiet. If you really want quiet, you should be looking more for a stock style muffler(s). The more rambunctious your engine, the harder it will be to get it quiet, especially without overly restricting it. Also, don't use any larger pipe diameter than required, otherwise it will be louder than you're looking for.

A good recommendation will require knowing some more specifics about your engine and whether or not you have headers or stock exhaust, are you concerned about max horsepower, etc..

I have el cheapo hush thrush from summit on my 390. My pipes are 2.5, and run out the back. It has a nice quiet rumble, but you can still have a conversation or listen to radio. It can have a little snarl when you get on it. I have the chambered version of the hush thrush with 428 exhaust manifolds and factory H pipe.

My 67 390 vert since wanted mostly stock look, using a SCJ exhaust manifolds with "H" pipe. (didn't want headers).
Being a vert where exhaust has run in tunnel under vert plate, had to do 2.5" pipes straight back thru Cherrybomb Turbo mufflers. Over the axle and using stock exhaust hangers and quad tips.
I think sound just right. And BB rumble perfect.

Personally I prefer I like turbo style mufflers. Quiet so you don't piss the neighbors off but a nice growl when you put your foot into it. Very little if any noticable drone. My go to muffler is the Summit house brand. I don't know who makes them but very nicely USA made and don't break the bank.

Here's a short 1-3 pull in my 66. Motor is a stock GT40P with a factory Mustang 5.0 cam.

I like the Dynomax Super Turbo, I think you have enough room for the longer version under the car......that would quiet it down and still have that musclecar sound......I have a 3 inch under mine, Magnalflow, and it was pretty loud, so I stuffed some Car Chemistry muffler inserts in the tailpipes and that toned it down to reasonable...

I would also recommend Dynomax. I helped Kelly-H work on her 66 fastback years ago and she took me for a ride after. She runs Dynomax mufflers and I really liked them. Good sound but not too loud and no drone. I wanted Dynomax for my Mach 1. I talked to two different exhaust shops who steered me away. They both said the Dynomax wouldn't last and highly recommended Dynomax or Flowmaster. They both said I could buy them myself and bring them in. I went with Flowmaster. WAY TOO LOUD. Mrs. Klutch hated riding in my Mustang. After driving on the freeway my head would pound. Super annoying drone. I took the car back to the shop and had them add resonators. Now it sounds nice; a lot like Dynomax. :D

I put these new Pypes Turbo Pro mufflers on my 390. They are affordable and made of 409 stainless. I had a hard time finding stainless turbo mufflers that were priced reasonably until I found these were recently released. I haven't fired them up yet but I bet they sound nice. I also put some straight resonators in front of them to bring the sound, and hopefully any drone, down to a reasonable level.

Hi, any updates? I ordered this same muffer for my '66 289 and am curious what to expect in terms of loudness.

Adam, have you considered something like a Hooker Aero Chamber or a max flow, also Hooker ? Walker makes some nice 'Super Turbo' mufflers. Keep in mind that sound is VERY subjective, what one man likes, another hates. You can listen to some other peoples engines and mufflers online if you search. LSG
