I have a 1966 mustang 289 with a c4 auto trans I noticed the trans had leaked out a lot so I looked at it and it turns out the trans will only hold about 4 quarts of fluid if I put more than 4 it leaks out as fast as I pour it in I changed the pan gasket and took the modulator and vacuum line out to clean there was no blockage or anything so I put it back on there is also oil spitting out of the dipstick when the car is at running temp this happened the same time the trans started leaking out so I’m pretty sure its connected I don’t know if it’s the torque converter but I was wondering if there could be anything else I could try before dropping the trans and taking a look I’m going to look at the shift shaft tomorrow because I heard that can cause a lot of problems but if anyone has suggestions or correct me if Im wrong about something please reply

The torque converter holds a lot of fluid in it and it doesn't normally drain out when you take the pan off. So if you can only put 4 quarts in it and that brings it up to full then that's probably all you need.

You could also need a dipstick o-ring. If it's leaking somewhere other than the o-ring you'll have to clean it up with some brake cleaner and dust some powder on it so you can see where it's dripping from.

"Converter drain back" is a common occurrence on C4's when the torque converter, normally full of fluid, partially drains down to the level of the pump when sitting... the excess fluid raises the level in the pan to where the pan gasket, dipstick o-ring, shaft seals, etc., are now below the fluid level and prone to leak.

The C4 in my 67 coupe was leaking so I replaced the pan and the gasket. Got a new pan that had a drain plug, and the gasket was a rubber material instead of cork. It still leaked but not as much. I posted on this forum and received quite a few replies regarding the dipstick O-ring. Replaced the dipstick O-ring and no more leaks. The dipstick leak looks a lot like the pan is leaking due to the way the ATF runs and drips.

Sometimes it isn't the dipstick o ring itself but that tab that bolts the dipstick tube down. If it gets bent it can prevent the tube from going all the way in where the o ring will seal.
