Clutch Slippage

Hello,

What kinds of things can cause a clutch to start slipping prematurely ?

I had a new transmission and clutch installed in April and the clutch is starting to slip. There is about 5000 miles or so on it. I have had many manual transmission cars and the earliest I've ever worn one out is about 30000 miles. It has a hydraulic clutch, not the hydraulic throw-out bearing kind if that factors in. My shop tells me these things are generally not adjustable.

Thanks for any help,
Kevin

Oh, yeah, those hydraulic clutches can be very adjustable...

My wife's Acura went in to replace a leaking clutch MC and intially worked great, but when she went to Vegas for a hair show, it suddenly started slipping in the Palace Station's parking garage......she called me and I told her to gingerly get it over to the Acura dealer (which was luckily only a few blocks away) and get it looked at. The mechanic said whoever replaced the MC (our local Acura dealer) adjusted the linkage wrong...it should've never been moved...he fixed it and it's been fine ever since...

So, I guess it depends on the vehicle but I'd get it looked at anyway...also, sometimes an improperly bled system will put pressure on the throwout bearing and cause the clutch to slip...

Sorry I can't be of more help...one of those "gotta see it" deals...*G*

It's in the shop now. I wanted to have some knowledge about the problem so I can be prepared when they tell me what is going on.

If you'd like to know, it is a Johns Mustangs clutch assembly and hydraulic kit. Mustangs Plus sells the same hydraulic kit. It's been fine since April. I have not had to do anything to it but top the MC off once in a while. I thought I had been noticing it engaging further out as time went by and recently noticed it starting to slip. I'll see what the shop says.

Thanks for the reply,
Kevin

Just as a point of reference, I've topped the clutch MC off in my diesel pickup once in the 16 years I've owned it (still has original clutch)....those Ford systems are sealed and the whole thing goes in the trash if one part fails...

So far, knock on wood...*G*

I would be a little wary if I had to top off the clutch MC "once in a while"....

The reason I say this is because, as the clutch plate wears, the pressure plate fingers move outward, towards the transmission, and would, if anything, retract the slave cylinder piston and cause the reservoir level to rise, not fall...

So, in your case, I'm nonplussed...*G*
