1965 mustang 170 I6

Installed a new Autolite 1100 carburetor and a new distributor.

It runs great!,, but on a cold start it looses power and can barely idle after about 1/2 mile drive. It begins loosing power and slowly comes to a stop and it dies within about 15 seconds,

then after siting for 15 to 20 minutes it is ready to re-start and everything goes back to normal???

Any idea what it is???

If your running a stock ignition replace the condenser under the dist. cap. $5.00 at the parts store. Condensers will cause the problem your having. I've been in the same boat as you. Runs fine then sets and everything is ok for a little while. If you find that this is the problem order an accel points and condenser. You will not regret it.
I installed a new condenser and it fixed my problem. Less than two weeks later it returned. I replaced the condenser again and fixed it. I then ordered a name brand (Accel) and it's been two years now. I also had some backfiring to go along with it.

Wow, thank you to all,

It dose smell gassy out the tail pipe, and it did backfire, but only once, I didn't see smoke though, I focused on the carburator and forgot to check spark, Thank you :)
next time i will check spark,

It is a new cap and rotor and a new distributer,, so i will look into those,

thank you guys so mutch.

Im thinking of checking the condenser, not sure how,, but i supose i might just replace it again???

i will see if the supply house has one,

any brand recomended???

Hey, a clogged fuel filter, where it screws into the carb can also do that. The metal filter won't hold much dirt. The dirt can clog, settle, clog, settle again. Happened to me a few times over the years but fortunately the filter is cheap and easy to install.
Argh! After rereading your post about a new carb you must already have a new fuel filter.

Next.

I am surprised this tiny part is so important and failed so easily.

I am thinking of carrying a spare with me at all times.

anybody else do that?

I don't really understand why we need capacitors in the first place,, I thought it was simply there to extend the life of the points switch.

Is there a way to make the car run temporarily if it fails again? I don't want to get stuck someplace. ):

Do they normally give warning that they are dying? This one gave me 2 warnings by taking 15minute time outs on warm up.

when i had my dizzy redone by Tim my capacitor failed on its maiden voyage 5 miles from the house.

took me a few minutes to figure it out. I have to admit i was stumped there for a while.
funny thing is I had spark testing coil to ground but she wouldnt turn over under load and she was backfiring like a monster truck

good news that you can just disconnect it and car will still run fine to get you home.

I since bought motorcrafts from rockauto and keep it with a set with points and plugs in the glove box
