I personally dig 17’s, but if red lines are preferred, you’ve got to run 16’s. My buddy has 16’s on his 65 vert and they look great.

 

I am partial to the 16". The chrome on those 17" just looks out of proportion IMO.

 

I like the 16s, but then again I’m biased because that’s what I run with BFG redlines on my car.

 

Im probably the only one that thinks you should run a 15. There isnt enough sidewall on a 16 or 17 and the red stripe seems irrelevant.

 

I'm sort of disappointed I didn't get the 16s as I have the legendary 15x7's on mine. The 16s seem to have nicer proportions!! I too will be going red line or whitewall on them with the next set of tires.

 

The 16s look natural. The 17s look … well, not that good; just too little side wall IMHO. Maybe it's the stance of the second car; it seems to sit higher even though the tires have slightly smaller diameter (per the chart you linked to). Or maybe 225/50x17 would look better.

 

I went with the 17x7, because they didn't offer the 16 in 7" width. I don't regret it a bit.

I ended up going with 17” x 7” and 17” x 8”. Mainly because the 16” were on back order for an uncertain amount of time. But, I am very excited I went with 17”. Matched with the redline tire, I think they look really good

Can you tell me what size Diamond Back redlines you have?

 

for those running the 16x8 on a 65/66 what suspension changes if any did you make? I am having trouble with the upper control arm hitting the very outside edge of the rim at full lock. My car has the Shelby drop (think it is 1 3/4) and wedge kit. Maybe 1 inch drop springs. Stock arms. the suspension mods were made before I bought the car which adds to the unknowns. Would like to run 225/50. Had to add 1/4 of washers to shim the spring perch to get adequate clearance at the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender.

I would go 16s...but from a practical perspective, you have a lot more tire options with 17s

For those asking, the tires are 225/45/17 in the front and 245/40/17 in the rear. No rubbing at all

 

I'm looking to get this exact same wheel and tire combo. Are you running disc brakes up front and the factory drums out back? Any suspension mods? Did you roll the fenders at all?

 

I finally got my 16 x 8 on my 66. sort of a long rambling story, but you find it in the general forum.

 

Do you think you could have gotten away with 235's up front?

 

Great looking car. Is it Wimbledon white or a different white? I'm getting my 65 coupe painted and am trying to decided between wimbledon and 64.5 mustang pace car white.

Thanks for the info. Do you know when it was last painted? A lot of the Wimbledon whites I've seen are quite yellow, but those may just be old paint jobs that have yellowed with age.
